Russia, to prevent identity theft (which is prevalent there) are rolling out ATMs that can scan your passport, your finger prints, YOUR FACE, and even your voice to identify you real-time.
Cool or not? Ist Hammer order nicht? http://tech.slashdot.org/story/11/06...e-Detector-ATM |

Having been a victim of ID theft, I vote for "cool". But I also vote for uncool.
It's a slippery slope.

I knew that somehow I can still make use out of otherwise redundant passport in some of the ATM's (EU countries do not require it anymore to travel)
With evolution of key enabling technologies in IT, the hackers and scammers have become even more clever and unstopabble. One wonders how safe ATM withdrawals and internet banking will be in new cyber theft era. At least back in SA criminals still retort to primitive cash in transit heists or ATM bombings. Only clever few will swop your cards or insert the thin card readers inside the machines to retrieve you code.

What happens when the ATM machine detects you as a
false positive, and you are stuck penniless in the middle
of the night.
No need to chop of fingertips, there are numerous
techniques to create molds of fingerprints, using
gummy, gelatin, silicon, etc.

the problem is the false negative when the system denies access although you claim to be the legit owner of the account.

I think you have false positive, and false negative mixed up: type II errors (or false negatives) classify imposters as authorized users type I errors (or false positive) classify authorized users as imposters. | Quote: | | | | | False positive is actually good, i could make usage of your bank account

I mixed up cause in biometrics false negative = false acceptance and false positive = false rejection ...... (in my foggy mind negative= rejection and positive= acceptance).
