Yes, many of the rioters were bragging on Facebook and Twitter, others are naming offenders.

This seems to happen in a lot of North American sports? Even if a team wins, their fans seem intent on trashing the town. I know we Brits have (had?) a bad hooligan problem, but they tend to fight each other and it rarely spills out to affect others (exceptions have occurred obviously). I've never once heard of Man Utd, Chelsea or Liverpool* fans rampaging after winning, or losing, a major title.

*Not that we've won much recently
Yeah, it happens periodically in the U.S. But, ya see, after your team wins, those are happy fires, not angry fires.

As far as I can recall, it's more common after big college games than for professional sports championships. There's a higher concentration of drunk young men at the college games.

Re: Some people need to grow up...

Where does this "only in America" argument come from?

May 2011, Zurich Letzigrund stadium: That's what bathrooms in a stadium look like after a four digit number of fans go mad...

1500 forced down the entrance control, smashed several food stalls (and stole the cash), destroyed various installations... that's a bit more than a few rotten apples.

http://www.20min.ch/sport/fussball/story/13144690

and it even happened BEFORE the game, so I can hardly believe it matters who wins.

I'm not saying it is exclusively a NA phenomenon, but it does seem to happen over there a lot more after a major sporting final than anywhere else. Your example above is within the stadium no? Vancouver fans trashed the city centre.

For some reason the first thing that popped in my mind when I saw that pic was Keith Moon.

Re: Some people need to grow up...

why do they do it? because they can

thousands of people standing around and not stopping those scum bags, instead filming it on there phones in the hope of some youtube glory.

Police who have been hamstrung by the loonie liberals, so instead of steaming in at the first sign of trouble have to stand back and ask very politely if you really wouldn't mind stopping rioting.

I hope all those youtube videos come back and bite those idiots on the arse.

Even in the semi-finals of Swiss hockey, there were more riot police out for the hooligans than VPD personal in VanCity after the game. The difference is that the hooligans here fight each other, and the dissapointed Canuck fans take it out on "the man". Not condoning it by any means, but it was expected. Happens in Montreal fairly often. Would be the same and worse in Toronto, if the Leafs ever made the playoffs.

Impressive! I think I remember seeing something here on EF the day of that match, that anyone going to/through Altstetten should be aware ...

I don't think anyone is making that argument, or at least I wasn't trying to. I am aware that sports riots occur throughout the world. But being more familiar with N.A., I thought I could respond to PaddyG's comment about riots that occasionally occur there to celebrate wins.

Re: Some people need to grow up...

I find it interesting that this became a world news event.

In terms of riots on the global scale, this was just a little civil unrest with some showy fires, with no future global impact.

Meanwhile at Bilderberg.

Or it happens more infrequently but is better reported because it's anomalous. That and we have a press corps that just drools over anything with good video and no research necessary. Conclusions based on personal impressions aren't worth much, esp since Eurohooligans were the real professionals while the North Americans were still trying to figure out how to insult each other effectively.

Fab picture of the couple smooching in the middle of the whole episode.

That's not something you'd expect to see in a town punch up.
Things may not be as they look. It appears that the man may have been assisting an injured woman.
