Venezuelan president Hug Chavez announces cancer operation

Chávez said doctors had removed "cancerous cells" from his body.

Poor guy, very difficult to manage ones response when one gets such news; probably a good & brave thing that he has so publically announced it.

Reason for my posting it here was it struck me that the next steps politically in Venezuela will be difficult.
Chávez has no obvious successor so what will happen? I believe elections are due soon but I thought anyway Chávez had appointed himself for life?
Probably a number of lesser known people trying to jump in & fill the gap?

How do I edit the title? "Hug" Chavez!!

Never done that. Next election 2012. He was candidate, not primary elections needed in his party the PSUV. Now, he has to do a bit of strategic thinking. Mitterrand was 14 years long president with a cancer... part of the talks is medical, part is political. Normal business in a institution based on elections.

His family members will fight over power. They are already fighting over the money. They have been to CH twice in the last 3 months talking to multifamily offices.

I checked; Chavez just changed the rule that presidents are only allowed a limited number of terms (2?) to an unlimited number.

The next step will be that presidents are elected for life...

Yes, but that is not president for life... the president still has to be elected regularly.
