Re: News of the world phone hacking - Milly Dowler

Cameron's speaking now. It's on CNN if you want to watch it online.
He'll make a statement later about his own situation. Let*s see if he's more contrite about hiring his 'friend' Coulson.

Re: News of the world phone hacking - Milly Dowler

Ed Mlliband''s questioning of Cameron's judgements is going very well following the Speaker warning members to shut up.
The Tory front bench look very sheepish. (probably just 'hacked' off because they were meant to be away on holiday today :-) )

Re: News of the world phone hacking - Milly Dowler

Oh dear! Mr Cameron's just described his chief of staff Ed Llewellyn, who's under heavy fire from aa lot of directions as keeping Cameron in the dark about phone-hacking, as being "utterly beyond reproach".

I will expect his unexpected departure one way or another in the very near future

If Labour had a half decent leader, he could probably have capitalised on this

Not really, as Cameron said, most of the hacking and police cover up happened under the Labour government.

They are both in the pockets of the big media boys.

I was referring to the hiring of Andy Coulson.

But I guess Milliband (I can never remember which one won) has two former NOTW staff employed as well

Re: News of the world phone hacking - Milly Dowler

Cameron will follow Murdoch's lead-
1. Negate any responsibility, knowledge or collusion.
2. Claim that you just inherited a system.
3. Fire people but keep them on the payroll
4. Put anyone that you want to shut up under contract then claim that you can't breach the contract even if the other party is willing to do this. ( gag order)
5. Say sorry for any inadvertent harm caused, however innocently enacted (get the name of that teenage girl right). You don't have to mean it or admit guilt some people are just suckers for the word. Sorry ain't the hardest word!

6. Come in as the hero-say that although you didn't start the phone hacking you will be the one to put a stop to it, where others failed.
7. when it comes to difficult questions requiring specifics , just say that you cannot answer that you have faith in the justice system of which you ( like the majority of the British public)are a fervent advocate,as you may be compromising the criminal investigation. Justice must be done!

If it happened on the watch labour MP's- such as hacking into a murdered teenager's phone- why didn't we hear about it? Is there any evidence that such grave acts of criminality were performed under the Labour Government? If so what are they? The public should be made aware of all.

Milly Dowler was murdered in 2002.

Here's a fun quiz for you: who was Prime Minister in 2002?

  • Gordon Brown
  • Tony Blair
  • David Cameron
  • Winston Churchill
  • Pitt the Younger

It wasn't exposed until 2011 by the Guardian ( one of your favourite newspapers) but yes anything that happened under a Labour government needs to be investigated for collusion, especially if they ( like Cameron) hired one of the culprits.

The phone hacking first emerged in 2005, when Blair was Prime Minister, in fact Blair and Kate Middleton's phone was hacked. So probably no collusion there.

But Cameron hired Coulson after knowing that he was guilty.

Cameron stuck by Coulson still saying that he believes in presumption of innocence before being found guilty. Which is perfectly true.

Only when he was pushed, did he open up that if Coulson was found guilty of anything (although it wasn't when he worked for the Tories) he would have lied to everyone not just Cameron. At that juncture he said that in hindsight he now thinks he wouldn't have employed him (first ever comment I've heard when he's wavered).
He went on to say that if Coulson was found guilty in the future he (Cameron) would owe the House a massive (can't recall the precise adjective) apology, which sounded like it might be of a resignation scale magnitude.
Then we'd be left temporarily in the hands of Clegg who is always looking around distracted and only half interested during Cameron's PMQs. Oh Lordy.

Here's something from an interesting site called Weejeepedia...

Quote:
In 2003, when asked whether "you" had made payments to police, [Rebekah] Brooks told a House of Commons committee, "We have paid police for information in the past".
On who's watch? Difficult to say...

And the police need to be investigated too. The police had some of the records, and should've had more, but did not investigate fully. It took far too long. We shoulda known about it during the labour government. If the police had done there job rather than had nice lunches and pamper weeks.

The three monkeys, Politicians, police and NI. Pity there isn't a 4th, do no evil, monkey.

Not sure if this is allowed (or will work), it's a bit rude, so if you are easily offended to not click the link.

The guardian did raise the alarm in 2002, reported it to the Surrey police who probably reported it to the Mets. It was then investigated operation Motorman by Richard Thomas the then Information Commissioner of the United Kingdom. However the Guardian didn't know the full extent until 2011, before then it was put down to rogue elements who were fired. Nbody really took much noticed of his report "What Price Privacy Now?" as of course it was not publicized by the press. The only person to really fight for further investigation was Prescott who was himself a victim.

It would be interesting to know if Cameron was is a phone hacking victim. Surely Christopher Graham should have been consulted with the Coulson appointment.

Re: News of the world phone hacking - Milly Dowler

I should've gone home ages ago (got to pack to move to Zurich) but am attached to BBC parliament.

It's amazing how good MPs hindsight is.

I'm glad they brought up NI's banning of the NUJ in their papers, not that I knew the clause they had about ethical reporting, and not intruding on personal grief.

My dad stood on the picket lines at Wapping in the 80's. Many a night my mum and us kids would worry, before he came home, cold and tired. It's taken 25 years but finally the parliament can see how the underhand methods of excluding the unions has damaged media integrity (OK, it was printing union primarily, but the NUJ were banned too).

Re: News of the world phone hacking - Milly Dowler

Fogginess, vague answers and backtracking abounds.

Actually, is there really such a thing as "20-20 hindsight" ( la Cameron)?

PS : DB - your quiz made me laugh a lot, but you didn't provide the answer.....
