British honeymooners die in suspected accident in Maldives resort

Tragic news, not yet in mainstream media info still sketchy....

"MALE, August 6 (HNS) A young British couple died early Saturday morning in Kuredu Island Resort after a suspected road accident involving a buggy car."

Re: British honeymooners die in suspected accident in Maldives resort

I am finding it hard to imagine how a golf buggy could cause 2 deaths? and what's money got to do with things? Just because the couple were honeymooning in the maldives does not imply they have lots of money

It's hardly Bognor - the Maldives, still don't come cheap - especially golf resorts.

I would think that if a buggy hits a tree head on, there's a good chance that the occupants will be propelled forward into same tree - even at the lowish speeds that they go at.

Hit a tree head on (literally) and the neck wont stand a chance.

Re: British honeymooners die in suspected accident in Maldives resort

I used to be an employee on this Island and we never had golf buggies then.

Accident occured at 4:15am!!!

It's all just rumours at the moment, I can't get hold of any one on the island but the rumour is that the 3rd person involved is a member of staff!

Maybe the honeymoon was a collective wedding present. No need to assume because someone visits the Maldives that they are rich. I wish it were the case as we've just been and we are far from rich

True ............. I also remember a time when Tenerife (Canaries, in general) was an expensive, exotic, semi-tropical location - but (in relation to the Maldives) ..... has the water levels risen - or have they just sunk that low?

Easy: http://www.holidaycheck.de/hotel-Rei...hRefreshAnchor

A halfboard trip with flight for two week costs you some 1600 EUR per person - this is not exactly the most expensive resort on the Maldives. I have been to the Maldives multiple times as we love to dive (but not this very hotel).

Every time have we met British honeymooners. While I do not consider myself rich (but yes, we have two good and full Swiss salaries) were they typically making less than us. British people seem to spend way more on the entire marriage - and the honeymoon seems to be part of it - relatively to their income than Germans. At some 2000 Euros a person is this in the budget for some folks I wished had stayed in Spain instead... it's a bit annoying if 90% of the people are there to relax and enjoy the quietness and some few took a bank loan to go there on honeymoon and party like they do on Ibiza.

P.S: I have never seen a motorized cart on the Islands and would be absolutely unhappy if I was on a hotel where people drive around in noisy petrol carts. I found it already bizarre to see skinny Maldivian waiters driving morbidly obese European tourists around in electric golf carts so they don't have to walk the 200 meters from their bungalow to the all you can eat buffet.

Re: British honeymooners die in suspected accident in Maldives resort

The island in question is a larger island therefore quite normal to have transport. I have been twice - first time to a small island which you could walk around in 15 mins and the width was about 250m. Last year we went to a much bigger island and while we didn't need transport the staff did move around on golf buggies and even little mini buses

Neither of our trips were for a honeymoon but it's true that it's popular for Brits. The honeymoon is a large part of the wedding budget and I'd say most choose the Maldives to not party
