Yes, because taking away liberty is the standard way for the UK government to tackle any problem. A very sucessful strategy so far.

Indeed. I'd hope that they would have learned a few lessons like:

Successfully 'kettling' more-or-less peaceful protestors to stop them from demonstrating does not mean you have developed a useful strategy to combat unruly mobs of chavs hellbent on causing trouble.

Sticking up cameras everywhere to spy on the population 24x7 doesn't do squat when the trouble is being caused by people in hoodies/facemasks who don't give a damn about being observed.

Placing spies in protest groups is going to be less successful at preventing civil unrest than tackling actual antisocial behaviour and petty crime at source before it can escalate into mob violence.

Devoting substantial resources to combating an imaginary international web of super-terrorists is a less effective way to keep people safe than actually doing proper on-the-street policing.

There aren't pedos on every street corner so don't treat anyone who takes misbehaving kids to task as being one.

What needs to be done is that the rioters need to be bought off with the taxes of those who've actually bothered to do something with their lives.

I suggest giving them money for not doing any work, free housing and utilities, free education so that they may better themselves, free healthcare and even more money should they choose to reproduce.... hang on a minute, don't they get that already?

Well I guess bullets and sterilisation are cheaper...
this is what happens when Adidas doesn't make condoms

This is what Cameron meant by his "big society" then.

Was wondering about that!

Sick. I am ashamed that this is happening in my country. It certainly takes away the homesickness and feelings of wanting to move back

My parents would kill me if I behaved like this . I only hope I can raise my daughter with the correct morals and behaviours that my parents instilled in me and my sister. The moron parents of these kids clearly haven't done so with their spawn.

Re: The Tottenham Riots....

I suppose the handwringers are going to say its the thiefs mother and fathers fault.
This problem, as anybody that has lived in a major city in the last twenty years knows, is current and obvious.
This is not a problem of society, and you can`t cure it by discussing with them. They need a good beating and realise that if they behave like that there is a consequence.
End of and please don`t neg rep me anymore becuase its boring and frankly I find those people that choose to send you you a nice red medssage rather than discuss it on open forum need removing from such a forum.

Those parents gave up a long time ago their role as parents, they also probably lost the respect of their own children. I wonder if they are still part of the society.
How do you want the kids to respect their parents when they see how they are treated by the whole system: work hard for low money and when the banks/finance get crazy they get all the taxpayer-money and the parents get all the cuts or taxes to pay. I don't think they envy the situation of their parents.

Re: The Tottenham Riots....

I think that there should be a teen curfew, anyone of school age.
But this government has failed, p!$$ing in the updraught. I think that they should resign and give it over to the Miliband Brothers- they will sort it out.
I think it hypocrtical that those who have left have this holier-than-thou attitude, ashamed to be associated with Old Blighty. I just heard a reporter who said Why Ealing? Perhaps the rioters got wise to not wrecking their own neighborhoods. The social divide between rich and poor is disgusting, I am ashamed, but not of the rioters. Its amazing to me the double standard of people on this forum they are all for rioting in the Middle East against social injustice, but not in the UK. I am ashamed that this is such an uncaring society, I would never have voted for this government.

Police have asked shops in Hastings Town Centre to close early due to possible riot threats tonight. I guess this will be a precaution in many towns across the country.

You take my breath away.

The riots in the UK are nothing to do with social injustice - rather the opposite too much justice. It has little or nothing to do with the current UK government, And as for the Milibands heading up the cavalry - their thinking that of governments for the last 60 years got us in this mess. More of the same won't solve anything....

I was thinking the same.

I am ashamed that this is such an uncaring society, I would never have voted for this government.

Tell me that again when I was paying lot and lot of taxes in the UK- Not even talking about "overtime" I was forced to do, which were so taxed that it was nearly like working for free...

And when I lost my job, I could not even get any "benefit" or assistance because I had over 5000GBP saving... Not even talking about the hassle of the job centre who forced me to go but who said they'll never find me a job because i'm too qualified (...).

Maybe I should have spent regularly on crap and avoid making a safety saving account, at least I would have been paid.

So it's feeding a 1 way system where you're sucked out dry and will never be in a position to get help when needed.

So I would not say such an "uncaring society"...

Erm excuse me, is this the result of one year of coalition govt or 11 years of labour govt. Are you so naive to believe this is a political problem caused by the reintroduction of austerity to compensate for the mass overspending of labour or are you hijacking this thread to introduce a political view into what is a social problem?
