Lots of valleys, strange language, similar food (pizza = welsh rabbit?), live off tourism but despise tourists.

Good enough for me.

Re: The Tottenham Riots....

I've just seen the pictures on the BBC news. Most of Tottenham has been totally burnt out, and all the cars smashed/trashed etc. I reckon it's at least 18 CHF worth of damage. Unfortunately, the local council doesn't have that kind of money to effect the repairs.

* they had 18CHF collected from the tax payers.
Unfortunately they already spent them in their running expenses: they bought a large tube of Vaseline to ease the citizen's pain.

Can you please pay more taxes so they can also buy new furniture for their flat or restaurant meals?

Sorry, what events in Tottenham? hm.. dunno, don't care: it concerns basic citizen not proper Politician Elite!

The white ones are not trained because they don't hide their face.
On the other hand we can clearly see the professional in the other picture because they hide their face....
ok, fair enough, although that were not the same events, in the Tottenham thing they reacted because "one of them" was killed...

But yeah those vandals, white, grey, yellow, etc... should be punished!

They were identical events, in that a gang of kids went out and had a load of fun because the police were unable to prevent them from doing so.

Riots are, first and foremost, very very entertaining for the participants. The opportunity to nick stuff from shops and people's houses comes a close second, but the main reason people riot is that it's a rare opportunity to smash windows, break stuff and set fire to things without getting caught.

It doesn't matter whether they're black kids from a council estate or white kids from the suburbs: they're all having a whale of a time.

It's just a shame the people who live in their playground have to lose their lives, homes and livelihoods while the kids are playing their fun games.

Hey ho more riots to come hopefully.
Well, I kind of get where you are coming from.
There's a lot of problems in the UK today due to this country never had a successful class revolution (1649 doesn't count) like most other European countries - the class system is alive and kicking, and is one of the main reasons what is holding back this society.

BUT... I don't think the riots at the moment serve any higher moral/political motivation, their purpose is just vandalism and are completely pointless.

I find your sweeping generalizations pretty offensive, DB.
I'm a Londoner and am not 'feckless, workshy or socially deviant'.
Yes, I detest what has happened in Tottenham, but to say 'Londoners are detached from common decency' is untrue and unfair. Most of the people in my part of London are hardworking and as decent as anyone you would find in any part of Switzerland. I agree we're a dying breed, but we still very much exist and, for the most part, are proud of being English, and horrified by what is now all too frequently happening in SOME parts of London.
If I made a statement that everyone from Zurich was a money-grabbing, humourless, inbred, self-centred, drug-taking robot, that might well be true in some cases, but certainly doesn't apply to everyone from Zurich.
I still have a flat in London which has never been burgled or vandalized. I'm hardly ever there, but the pots outside my door remain undisturbed, and have done for years, unlike here in the centre of Lausanne where, frequently at weekends, thugs destroy the flower-pots outside my neighbour's gates, and where my daughter, visiting with small children, was recently attacked by drug-addicts.
Yep, love London and hardworking Londoners, lived there for years, no house break-ins, no car theft on my street.. and non of my friends there have had any bad experiences that I know of. My Swiss neighbours have had their house broken into during Sportsferein a couple of years ago and another friend's house down the road got broken into last year, and my sister had her wallet & driver license stolen from her bag in Zürich HB a few years back..

Sh!t happens in cities..
