Globalization is not just about oursourcing, or indeed insourcing, or nearsourcing. It is about removing the barriers for those things to happen.

It is very important for us to remember that this is just a tool. Globalization, just like Democracy or Capitalism or Communism is just a political or economical tool. These tools themselves cannot be accountable for good or bad and by themselves have no impact.

It is only through the ethical or non-ethical implementation of these tools that we can judge the people that used the tools.

Clearly globalisation has been used for much wrong. But clearly it has been used for much good. There would be no International Space Station, CERN, Live Aid, potential cure for AIDS and many other wonderous things in this world if it were not for globalisation being used for good.

I feel that people will far too quickly blame a tool than the person that implemented something of great evil with that tool.

Yes, we should buy local to show that we can be independent but when we can't source locally we should have the ability to source somewhere else. Imagine there being a cancer drug in the US that would save your life but they would not sell it in Switzerland becuase there was no globalization. We would not be having this conversation right now if it were not for globalization.
Oh no! This cognitive conflict is burning my brain, Music Chick has my sentiments entirely, yet Colinwheeler is also so right Aaargh! I'm off to the dump for recycled compost.
If you think about cancer drugs not sold freely, ( it was blocked by patents on the human gene) that is what the US courts just put a stop to- thank goodness.
If the jobs in the UK are now mainly in service industries (and I'm not sure that claim is correct) is it a failing on the education system to provide people for the services industries, or do people simply not want to do those jobs, or are there not enough jobs to go round?

I'm a fan of freedom, but no, I don't want people walking around in face masks. Loads of London shopping centres already ban hoods.

Someone's been arrested for mugging the Malaysian student. What it doesn't make clear yet is whether this is someone from the first mugging (when his jaw was broken) or the second (when he was helped up and someone stole from his rucksack).

I think the British government should accept the offer.

They don't seem to be doing very well by themselves...

I was more talking about the shutting down social networks. If Dave shut down the social networks then who would be tidying this mess up?

Also the face mask thing is maybe a stealthy way of them to bring in a ban on full face veils.

Regardless how will this law change what will happen? Will they stop wearing face masks because they are illegal? They are wearing face masks because what they are doing is illegal in the first place.

Re: The Tottenham Riots....

I wonder why the riots didn't spread to Scotland or Wales. There must be some clever national/socioeconomic/geographical/political explanation that I can't think of right now. I mean maybe it's because Scotland has stuck all the ferals in Glasgow and they let them loot whenever they like...

So you're saying Glasgow needs London to physically burn in all-out anarchy to pip it in the livability stakes? I'd agree.

Not really much to burn is there - a riot in Scotland is like bombing Libya. It looks pretty much the same after it's done.

The forecast had been for quite unseasonably heavy rain for the weekend.

Rab the Rioter might be a wee dunderheid but he's not entirely glaikit.

And we were also too busy celebrating the thrashing we had given the paddies earlier in the afternoon...

Nor did it spread to the Geordie nation, because we are a balanced and sophisticated people up there.

Surprised the Mackems, the Smog Monsters and the Monkey Hangers didn't get in on the action though

I'd like to say it was because we (SCO) and Wales have a far greater sense of National Pride, and wouldn't go about $hitting on our own doorstep (we much prefer sending the huns down to Manchester for a riot).

But, I think weejeem probably has a point, rain looked likely, and waterlogged shell-suits aren't a good look, plus the possibility of heavy rain diluting their bottles of buckie made a riot entirely impossible.
