Apparantly according to friends who live in the Hackney area of London the Police are doing nothing at all.

I doubt that they have the resources to deal with multiple trouble zones around London.

This is a chav uprising and there's lots more of them than there are police.

Small consolation for the decent people living in the thick of this, the people who have paid their council tax.

Well, if those people feel that the police are in the right, they will support them.

If they think the protesters are in the right, they will support them.

Sitting behind their doors is the third option but in some ways just as risky.

I am sorry but I have a hard time feeling sympathy for people caught up in this. It has been a long time coming and people should be seeing that. I know it is terrible for them and if there is anything I could have done or could do I would but I don't think there is. Those who got out made the right choice before getting caught between a rock and a hard place.

But they do have the resources to deal with the millions of visitors during the olympics?

(Let's hope nothing is going to happen then...)

The millions of visitors aren't likely to be feral chavs with no sense of how to interact with the rest of society..

It's easy to keep regular people in line. It's a lot harder to deal with a mass of people who have precisely zero regard for the law or social norms.

I don't think that a security response or anything direct from the authorities will fix this in the longer term - British society needs to wake up and assert itself. I would be very surprised to see this happen though.

Both Switzerland and Greece spring to mind. I'm sure other members could suggest other countries where jobs for the lads are the norm, too.

The United Kingdom isn't as special and unique as some Brits would have us believe.

A good article about exactly this in the Guardian this evening: There is a context to London's riots that can't be ignored.

The study is linked in the above article: OECD: UK has worse social mobility record than other developed countries

1816: BBC London says there is criminal activity on the A202 Peckham High Street, which is blocked near Rye Lane - with shops being smashed and buses attacked.

All buses have been pulled out of the area surrounding Lewisham and Peckham.
I read about buildings put aflame, destroyed police cars and destroyed buses, but what is the matter all about really ??? I mean, I might understand if "social" protesters would try to put fire on 10 Downing Street or Harrods, but why buses ?

These questions may be dull for informed insiders about North London, but, I am NOT an insider ........................

There appears to be trouble in Birmingham now too - not being shown on TV though I did hear someone mention it near the end of Ch4 news.

Hmmm... scroll down this page and have a look at the high quality photographs of 'looters' ransacking a jeweller's shop in Hackney.

Do you see the preppy-looking chap with the lap top bag? Doesn't he seem a little, er, incongruous?

Anyone would think the photograph was staged...

Yep, love London and hardworking Londoners, lived there for years, no house break-ins, no car theft on my street.. and non of my friends there have had any bad experiences that I know of. My Swiss neighbours have had their house broken into during Sportsferein a couple of years ago and another friend's house down the road got broken into last year, and my sister had her wallet & driver license stolen from her bag in Zürich HB a few years back..

Sh!t happens in cities..
Sure enough, such things DO happen in cities. But while I knew what the matter was when there were the "Youth Riots" of 1980 in Zurich and knew what the matter was when such riots occurred in satellite-suburbs of larger French cities not too long ago, I in this case feel a bit "beside the shoes" !

Re: The Tottenham Riots....

It's interesting to see how the 24 hour news channels are hyping this in the same way that they do any 'story of the week'. This will almost certainly be counterproductive to the efforts of the authorities to calm things down.

Ironic since normally the politicans are so adroit at using media hype to further their own pet projects like 'the war on terror' and 'pedos are out to get your kids'.

Double edged blade, and all that.

There is no 'cause' that is behind this - there is a serious problem in British society where antisocial behaviour has been overlooked for a great many years. This has now reached a point where a lot of people have absolutely no regard for the law or society at large.

They are now seeing that when they clump together in mobs, they can have even more 'fun' than individual acts of vandalism or antisocial behaviour.

Just wait until groups with genuine grievances get in on the act, what we are seeing now is just the early stages unless it is stopped fast.

The police will simply not have the resources to deal with widespread mass civil disturbance as the authorities have concentrated on rubbish like mythical James Bond style international terrorist organisations being under every bed or pedos being on every streetcorner whilst a bunch of people have grown up in broken families, with awful education no prospects and no action taken by the authorities. They have been allowed to more or less do as they want and now they've taken it to the next level.

Very easy. People who smash stuff are criminal and criminals are foreigners because they have values that are foreign to me. They identify themselves as being foreigners through their actions.
I haven't met a race yet that didn't smash stuff, ranging from stepping on glasses or smashing plates at weddings to invading other countries. Some reports say that the rioters are outside thugs but it looks like these people are smashing their own communities.
