US economy - time for austerity measures ?

If so, what measures would be needed, just how firm should they be ?

I haven't seen the math, but many sources have claimed that just closing all the tax loopholes and subsidies would singlehandedly fix the US deficit.. it doesn't sound far wrong to me...

It would very easily fix it. But the Republicans* don't want any of that because those tax loopholes and subsidies directly benefit their donors.

*I'm pretty sure that the Democrats feel the same way, they just aren't as open about it.
