Re: Anonymous to 'own' Facebook!

I guess I just don't understand why Facebook seems to be so polarizing, given that one's level of participation in it, if at all, is completely at one's own discretion. I am firmly in the camp that values Facebook as a tool facilitating connections with friends and family who are half a world away. If you hate it so much, then just don't use it.

I most certainly try to keep my privacy settings as tight as possible, and I do find myself extremely annoyed with the changes FB periodically makes which require me to spend time "opting out" of stuff. I suppose I am also naive as to any purveyance/dissemination of my personal information which could be going on. For me personally, I find the upside greater than the downside. It's also easy to choose to "hide" those FB friends who post self-indulgent status updates, or just unfriend them.

We are all entitled to our opinions of FB and whether to use it or not. What we are not entitled to is to decide for everyone else that getting rid of it, for a single day or forever, is the proper course of action. I am sure there were those who felt exactly the same way about the telephone, television, (insert any other communications advance which is now ubiquitous) at their inception and mass adoption of usage.

Re: Anonymous to 'own' Facebook!

Perhaps if they gave some sources for the claims they make in the video it would be more believable.

http://itgrunts.com/2010/10/07/faceb...m-your-iphone/

They gave this. This is only the case for people who don't know how to work their privacy settings

http://www.physorg.com/news170614271.html

This is facebook app creator's fault...not Facebook entirely.

Re: Anonymous to 'own' Facebook!

I tried the Facebook thing for a while last year, but ended up deactivating my account after realizing that it only seemed to expose how socially retarded I am...

For one thing, I never knew what to update my status to.

I guess my life just isn't that exciting. Besides, who *really* cares when I loofah my buttocks?

i avoided it for a while but caved in and started to use it. it's useful to keep in touch with people/news/gossip and also to waste time with idle chatter. also can help people get in touch.

for example, since i was up at 2am a couple of days ago, i became a virtual shoulder for a friend to cry on. email/letters wouldn't have enabled this as they don't indicate who is online and are not 'real-time'.

I know what you mean...
I guess I seemed to have developed a love-hate relationship with it. It was a really nice tool to use to keep in touch (share photos, etc.) with my *close* family and friends, but then I kept receiving friend requests from people I went to high school with that I didn't know then and didn't really care to know now. I guess, the way I see it, just because we went to the same high school doesn't mean that we really have much in common. But it amazes me at how many people on that site do try so hard to "build up" the amount of people in their friends' lists.

But one thing I do appreciate about the EF is that it is so (relatively) private and anonymous. e.g. I can post something on here and not have to worry about my "Aunt Judy" seeing it.

If you don't see the value of it then you're either dumb or stupid. 99% of my friends has a facebook account and I'd say 40% use the chat protocol on instant chat programs like pidgin and adium. Most invites to birthday parties or catch-ups are run through fb. It also allows people who are not completely computer literate to connect to friends that are.

Don't get me wrong, I don't mind people who dislike it. Everyone has their reasons and it certainly has its merits. But if I hear another rant about how facebook is crap and how its ruining social structure or how people who like facebook are crap, im gonna go postal
No, I'm neither dumb nor stupid, but I manage to keep in touch with folks around the world without it so I'm not entirely sure of how a website is so essential for that. People manage to do it without FB and when it dies, there'll be something else. Just like kids at Harvard managed to get laid before FB, they'll manage to get laid long after it's gone, too. *shrug*

My loathing of FB has nothing to do with who uses it or why or how, my loathing has everything to do with the business underneath it.

This explains why you're a wealthy Internet entrepreneur hiding your billions in Switzerland and Mark Zuckerberg isn't fit to wash your Aston Martin Vanquish.
Well, I did get in on the Amazon, Yahoo! and RedHat IPOs back in the day.... And Zuckerberg is too young for my crowd. We invented the internet, he just hacked some website that happened to become rather popular. So, in a way, no, he's not fit to wash my DB9.

but i don't want email! i love fb and i does help me feel more connected to my friends & family in a way that works for me. short & sweet!

a friend posts about taking his kids to the whatever. i get a nice short sweet message about it with a cute pic. great! i'm happy. i don't need to talk to him for an hour about how it went and he doesn't have to spam his friends with email.

my cousin is currently doing quite well for herself. she's a painter who's career is soaring. someone in the family posts about the latest prize she won or what gallery she is showing at. yeah her! now i don't have to read the whole bloody article and i'm too far to visit the gallery but i love to know about it.

i like fb and i was initially resistant to it.

anyway, as was said above, i don't like anon (or assange or whoever) imposing their choices/ideas on me. what about those that don't agree with them? are they the only ones who are right? sounds a bit totalitarian to me.

don't like it? don't use it. simples.

Honestly, no, at least not a value that is equal to what people seem to place on it. I'm older though and I tend to keep a small, close circle of friends. I recently started using twitter and, while I see why many like it, I just don't see what the big appeal of it is - I even had to unfollow an old friend from a BBS I was on over 20 years ago since the volume of mostly inane verbiage drowned out any hope of actually interesting tweets from others.

My life isn't so busy that I can't write a few email every week to keep in touch with friends.
