Who do you think bought the first iPods, the first iMacs, the first Apple II etc.? Even the iPhone was a Nerd-Tool until it went mainstream. Perhaps once should define "nerd" here. I'm not necessarily talking about CS majors - I'm talking tech enthusiasts in general.
What is it like over there in the world of wrong?

btw.. All that good design and usability had nothing to do with Jobs. Jonathan Ive is the designer who makes it all feel good. I read somewhere he wants to come back to England.

what about the other 220m ipods? and 100m iphones?

you can say the first batch of anything are bought by nerds as they are the only people sad enough to stand in line for days on end just to be the first, but the fact you still can't walk into a shop and pick up an iphone speaks for itself, getting an ipod can be tricky too.

? Have you been to a store in the last, say 3-4 months? My wife bought an iPhone in July. They were readily available everywhere.
The iPod is dead.

Just because something turns into a mass-phenomenon doesn't mean that it wasn't a nerd-product in the beginning. I kind of fail to see your point.

lol that's a really thin argument, since its launch you've generally never been able to just walk in and pick one up, sure you get lucky sometimes and places have stock, or you can get the old model or expensive ones, but generally you have to wait.

I'd love to have the profits from the nerd only dead ipod, even with its now pathetic sales figures, I mean, hardly worth getting out of bed for is it, only 20m per quarter

Oh, didn't know you have a nerd-only iPod - I never said anything like that existed.

Anyway - yes, the iPod's dead. Did you even look at the sales figures above? Sales have massively declined since last year. I'd be more than surprised if they continued making them beyond the upcoming revision. Apple tends to kill off products that are on the decline.

I think you need to allow for Q2,Q3 and Q4 2011 results to come in. That would refute your claim that sales have massively declined.

I'd say that's unlikely - but we'll see. Considering that sales have been on the decline for 2 years now, I seriously doubt they'll suddenly pick up massively again in the 3rd and 4th quarter, with the iPhone 5 being the Christmas gift of preference and all.
And while the 4th quarter is the strongest for most companies, they won't sell 2/3 of the devices then.

last quarter was the weakest since 2005

He was always like that, it wasn't his illness. A strong, driven, creative personality is very often like this. They don't see it as bullying per se, they have a vision and it's their way or the highway.

Very much like Scully.

Apple is really, deeply in trouble as, yes, it was all Jobs. I remember vividly taking so much crap from my nerd friends at conferences, etc, for carrying a mac laptop until right after apple released the first airport base station and a couple of us brought them along to the conference and set up wi-fi in the speakers lounge and part of the conference area. Oh, the looks of envy from the PC crowd who had to dial-in or jack-in to get a network. Then OSX was released with the BSD core which led to everyone suddenly carrying apple laptops and being cool. Us old timers who were ahead of the curve just smiled.

And the NeXT! PS on the display! Laser printer! Jobs knew, as I and others knew, back when computing was something to hide, that a computer that wasn't networked wasn't as useful as one that was. This is even more true today when there's more to connect to than Usenet, Bitnet, gopher and MUDs. NeXTs came standard with an ethernet port. This was, what, 1988? Years ahead of its time.

He may be an asshole, but he's a damned brilliant one. I'm sad both for him and for what it means to Apple computers of the future. I guess I'll go snap up an iPhone5 and a new laptop this winter when I visit the states as who knows what the future will or won't bring.
We have ourselves a hipster.

'I liked Apple computers before they were popular...in fact before they were called Apple '

He made Apples sexy/desirable/attractive. Ladies would no longer be ashamed at their phone, it was hip to have an iPhone. Schoolgirls aspired to have one...

He turned technology into a parcel of beauty and desire.

Who else has done that with technology ?

That's not technology

Underneath the skin it has hardly changed for 50 years. They just dress it up to look good.

But fair point.

Apple is the Ferrari and Cartier of the computing and media world.

Dyson has an umistakeable coolness factor.

But is it genuinely first class design in the same drool league as Apple? I don't think so.
