You assumed the satellite is dropping vertically, so its energy would be given by
The satellite has had a semimajor orbital axis of 600km, so has been travelling at 7km per second,
hence its kinetic energy () dwarfs the potential energy of the vehicle.
At hypersonic speeds, a reasonable CD would be closer to 1 than 2.
As the vehicle reenters, components and sections will burn away, constantly reducing cross-sectional area.
Lastly - as should be pretty obvious by now - the vehicle will be decelerating, not accelerating.
Thus armed, and as A Good Manager should, I'll leave you to rework your calculation, rather than do your job for you
Your kungfu is stronger, wise one.

I found the reason for the public not to touch any remnants much more alarming - according to the Alarmzentrale/panic ministry:
"Due to the rapid impact some pieces may have sharp edges"
Yeah that was the cover-up for the second reason, the real one, that it is US Gov't property and people shouldn't tamper with it. ie. they don't want their space/defense secrets stolen by someone.

Oh, no finders keepers then? Shame... could do with some good decoration for my living room - anybody got a radiation suit they don't need anymore?
Just gave me a good giggle when I read this in the 20 Minuten on the train this morning...

Get away from my piece of satellite scrap! Mine... Mine... MINE MINE MINE
I felt embarassed when I was pointed at the cover, very excitedly, exclaming "we were talking about this like one month ago in EF!!!!" What would my life be without EF?
My 7 year old came out of school today and told me that we are going to get hit by a bus.. meaning the Satellite is on its way and it is about the size of a bus
