Recent reflections of a friend of mine on neutrinos and other sub-atomic particles:

''WTF are you talking about, neutronos or whatever that pass through everything? Including us you mean?? EWW that is so creepy! OMG! I don't want to get like, cancer!!''

Now I can tell her there is definitely no escape from this super-fast ''neutrino cancer''
Her name isn't Vicky Pollard is it?

Give 'em a call anyway. Tell 'em Weejeem sent you. Ask if they'd like to meet to discuss their investments and pension.
"I can send your funds to a galaxy far, far away - faster than the speed of light!"

And hidden away in the small print: "At such great speeds, your funds may contract to almost nothing, and you will be very, very old by the time you see any return."

Now, it's actually more a shift of type - just as these small things in the lanrge thing change from muons to tau do your funds change from "yours" to "mine".

hmm, what a strange response. not sure you understood what i meant - i was not asserting neutrinos were light, just observing that light (the speed of which they were comparing the neutrinos to) would pass fairly (as in infinitely) slowly through the ground...so to beat that speed is not so hard for a neutrino...but it was a tongue in cheek comment not meant to challenge their science...
Ummm
they were not shining lasers through the ground from Cern & comparing them with neutrino speeds.

They were measuring neutrino speeds & saying they were quicker than the speed of light; which is known.
Same principle as speed cameras; they do not have to have another car travelling alongside you at the legal limit in order to measure your speed & compare it with the limit

It's just made me realise; just because someone said so, why shouldn't anything travel faster than the speed of light? After all, it's only a property of a form of radiation. Innit?

Re: Well, it didn't bother Bonnie Tyler...

Not a scientist but I believe the problem is that they used to think neutrinos had no mass. With no mass they can travel as fast as they like. But then they decided neutrinos did have a mass, therefore can't travel faster than the speed of light without having an infinite mass and therefore destroying the universe.

But now they believe the neutrinos have mass *and* travel faster than the speed of light.

I wonder how they know it's the same neutrino as I assume they could only record "neutrino leaving A" and "neutrino arriving at B".

So in short, a bunch of guys in Italy were sent something from Switzerland which they, to their suprise, received earlier than expected........

How is that news

Once I've had a few beers tonight me and my mates will take a look at the CERN findings and see what they did wrong. Shouldn't take us more than a couple of pints to figure it out......

Re: Well, it didn't bother Bonnie Tyler...

I heard that they sent some neutrinos the other way too - from Italy to CERN.

When they arrived, scientists were suprised to see a bill for 18CHF attached.

Probably they were not using Swiss watches so their timing is suspect

could be some warm hole business going on for neutrinos...that wouldnt violate special relativity

The convenient postulation seems to be that on the way they nip in & out of one or more "other" dimensions so do not upset the theory about max speed = c.

That would be a good trick on the way home from the pub

Re: Well, it didn't bother Bonnie Tyler...

The problem with exceeding light speed is it means that there is a perspective from whence it would appear the neutrinos were going back in time, and that would cause causality issues. To get to the other side. Why did the neutrinos cross the road?

I reckon there's part of a cosmic string under the alps. This creates a region of space that has less than 2 Pi radians in a circle. Thus the neutrinos have a shorter path than expected. The question is whether the latinos get there any quicker?
