Re: Occupy America

I heard an interview with Michael Moore yesterday who is heavily involved with the Occupy movement and he said (paraphrasing) "It doesn't matter at all that there are no clear aims of this - what matters is that people are spontaneously mobilising to make their feelings heard"

Despite the impressive spread of the movement....I STILL can't get my head around what success looks like to these people. The comparison with the Arab Spring is off mark - they had one clear objective in mind and they refused to move until they got it.

It will eventually turn violent everywhere because it is unfocussed anger

I'm not a protestor but I find the lack of accountability from the usual suspects staggering in it's chutzpah. Every finance report over the last few years has shown there's been little in the way of reform and the carousel keeps spinning.

A clamp down on Tax avoidance would be welcomed. I don't see how Goldman, for example, get away without paying £20 million on interest when settling a dispute over UK national insurance issues without the aide of Her Majesty's Government. Accountability, anyone? This is just one story in many which make me think "Hang on..!" The little man pays taxes and is the first to lose his job.

Nice. You do two tours in Iraq, come back unharmed, only to get almost-mortally wounded while exercising your first-amendment rights back home.

Re: Occupy America

I like Peter Schiff. He called this whole mess out as people were laughing at him. He got the last laugh. Anyways here is the best comentary I have seen yet regarding the OCW. (other than the one above)

Excellent video, but the only problem is that the average American today is, sadly, too ill-educated to understand the message. We have the DOE, AFT, NEA in the US to thank for this.

Re: Occupy America

I was in San Franciso last week and we walked through the camp and looked at some of placards and I was saddened to see that many of them had nothing to do with the actual protest but that there was a lot of piggybacking of other topics which are not directly connected to the banks. There were placards about things such as banning hate speech or supporting Palestine which are just defocussing the question of the banks.

I agree- a huge 'flaw' in this movement is that there is no unifying aim or purpose, except to vent frustration, but as I mentioned earlier, too many individuals are too ill-educated to know at whom to direct this frustration or how to properly express it. IMO, this movement will be whittled away by numerous 'side-issues' and distractions that will fragment the protesters. They'll go home, feeling better about themselves, and not much change will result.
