Here is a link to a nice article from a couple of months ago by one of his neighbours.

That article, and the revelation that his autobiography was in the works, convinced me that the end must be very near.
So, the presentation of the "iSpaceship" in front of the Cupertino City Council will have been his last public appearance.
I hope they build it exactly as laid out in the designs.
For more than 5000 years, no one has had a larger mausoleum.

interesting idea. wonder if they'll put his remains in there as befits his demi-god status?

I think that'd be a bit much. Although, I'm still just trying to get over the news and stop feeling like I'm on the verge of a good sob.

Re: Apple Founder Steve Jobs Passed away age 56

Steve Jobs changed the way I looked at graphic design and typography. At 16 my first year at art college I was introduced to the typography room, a HUGE room full of beautiful but clumsy original letter press machines, drawers upon drawers of lead and wooden type - secondly I was introduced to the type scale rule for setting mock text blocks within designs (anyone who knows this, knows how tedious, long and boring a job it is).

My second year in art college blew everything I learnt from the 1st year out of the water - we got 5 shiny new Apple Macintosh computers and i was in love. Gone was the need for the typography room and type scale, in were proper computer generated smooth, non bit mapped fonts that i could set in blocks of text, without it taking me all day. I could lay out nice page layouts of images and text without having to spend a full day pasting up and type rendering. I could play with colours, graphics vectors, everything, the world was my oyster.

My second year was spent mainly in this dark dingy computer room full of clunky BBC computers and the 5 beautiful Apple Macs, this is where I could be found every day. A geek was born...

At 18 when I started Uni I spent my whole student loan on my first Apple Mac (£2300 on a Quadra LC630, 15" Monitor, Epson Scanner GT8500 and 45mb Syquest drive) a lot of money for an 18 year old but it was worth it - how proud I was of that beige but innovative box that could do oh so much more than any other PC for graphics.

So that is the story of how I became an Apple geek, fan boi, nerd, whatever you would call me

A man of dignity, fought a hard battle, and left so much in is wake. My condolences to his family, and my hope of continued vision for Apple.

This isn't actually a Steve Jobs quote. He was quoting from somewhere else (Whole Earth catalog)

Truly the Thomas Edison of the modern era. RIP - the visionary legacy will be remembered.
Jobs was an unparalleled visionary and business leader of the modern times and I truly admire his skills, but I do think the comparison with Edison is a bit off... Edison came up with truly new, groundbreaking inventions. Jobs was a master of refinement and design and marketing but certainly no Edison IMHO.

That's not needed.
I'm sure, his spirit will be haunting through the rooms, to keep the coders and designers awake who dared to take a nap instead of working and and polishing the future products.
;-)

The man fought cancer for an eighth of his life - and still kept overseeing iPhone and iPad designs to the smallest detail.
Next time you have a hangover or the snuffles and want to call-in sick at work, maybe you think of him.

I have nothing but respect for him - my condolences to his family and friends.

Funny and heart-warming article from Walt Mossberg: http://allthingsd.com/20111005/the-steve-jobs-i-knew/

Regardless, it's not his work so shouldn't be attributed to him. He never meant for it to be attributed to him.

Never Said its his Quote.. not attributing to him.... but wont forget that part of his speech. That's all.

He's the one who probably lived by it and was the best living example of it even 40 odd years after he first read it

Isn't this all turning a little "Lady Diana"?
Maybe we could have an apple parade though Bellevue

c'mon, get a grip - you didn't know him. You only know what he was like through his very effective and efficient marketing machine

I feel sorry for those he left behind, he has a good life , 56 is no age to die. But boy, he reached his potential. I feel sorry for his family and friends ...

But surely, just because you bought a iPod doesn't make him a personal friend.

Or have a missed something?

Great inventors die, great innovators die, great marketing men die. The world will still go on. Save your grieving for when it really matters .... the people you actually know

I tend to agree with the Hedgehog. Society does tend to be caught up in media and marketing image. I am certain he was a nice guy and very much an innovator but I had more concern about the bird the crashed into the window earlier. Thankfully it woke up after 10 minutes and was away within 20.
I am not certain Bill Gates will receive such love when he drops, even though he donates huge amounts of cash and time to some very valid charities and initiatives, example that small problem, poverty.
But still far to young to go. I hope Apple donate some efforts and $'s to Cancer research.

What do you define as grieving? writing a few nice words and remembering a visionary man is at most eulogising.

The latter is true but the former unlikely. You don't get to that level in business but being anything but a 24-karat gold pr*ck.

But he was definitely good at his chosen profession, although I personally never bought any Apple products

I didn't know him personally, but aside from building one of the original kit Apples, being an Mac user from day 1, I did get to meet him once. It felt like we got to know a bit of him through his products and his keynotes.

If you were into computers at the time the NeXT computers came out, you'd understand maybe a little more of the awe he inspired. It was clear at that moment that he understood where computing was going. And he did. It was 10 years ahead of its time. Apple is not going to have the same brilliance and I hope the product line won't suffer as much as I fear it could. There's nothing wrong with mourning the loss of a person such as him, even if we're not related.

Yep, and NeXT, or NeXT Step, is now better known as Mac OS X and iOS. Evolution has happened of course, but essentially that's what it is.
