Re: More than 15'000 pregnancies every hour: population 7 billion

Also another good graphical representation (population counter included!) from National Geographic. I have always been fascinated by population and economy, so athis is certainly a good time for reflections.

I'm pretty optimistic that population growth will find its own natural ceiling. Just to put things into perspective, we could fit every single man, woman and child into the State of Texas in a house with front/back yard; that would leave the rest of the planet to be our bread basket.

I think food is only a tiny part of what we must look at when it comes to a huge population. As more people need homes, more trees are cut and more green space is replaced with concrete. How long until the oxygen cycle is interrupted? As we pollute the environment and temperatures rise, how many places will become uninhabitable because of lack of water as places change to desert? Providing food for a huge population is just a piece of the puzzle. The real question is what is the population level that is sustainable on this planet given the resources that we have? No one knows what that "number" is, nor will we know what to do when we hit it.

I don't think it is a matter of space - it is a matter of resources to support such a population. Not everywhere in the world is capable of sustaining food production.

Look at the rain forests as a simple example. Everyone thinks (or thought) rich fertile soil, cut trees, grow crops, feed animals... well that didn't quite work out did it?

Look at countries like Bangladesh, where over-farming has produced mass flood zones, the combined overpopulation and regular floods, result in poverty and loss of income and belongings.

Then add nationalism and patriotism. In the "Texas" model, where will you put the Palestinians, Israelis, Turks and Kurds (to think of only a few dozen "hot topics" discussed on EF).

Most countries are getting closer and closer to a 2.1 birth rate because social aids in most countries are getting better and one no longer needs to make 7 children just to make sure 3 survive to help them through their old age.
Yes, because most European countries and the US are not teetering on bankruptcy either, are they? And health costs aren't an ever increasing drain on resources due to apathy of the population...

Expecting our third-and-final child in a few months. I reckon it makes up for the dozens of people we know who don't intend to have any at all.

As for overpopulation and education, I quite agree. If we could also extend that education to teaching the younger generations (and indeed the older ones) how to leave a smaller footprint on the earth in general, perhaps people wouldn't think it mattered quite so much how many children one had.

I'm so sorry, but this kind of behavior is simply unacceptable. Please sign up your new born for slavery or NASA's Mission to Mars.
