Some family. Were a father kills his daughter to preserve the family honor....
This is very rare. In fact, virtually unheard of in places like Iran. Your post is ignorant - this is far from representative of the area.

I had to fix this because while I was in a Muslim country I did have a male gynecologist. So not all Muslim countries are like that.
Well corrected. =) In fact, on education as a whole in places such as Iran, women are dominating the schools and their presence in medical schools is rising.

But it happens in Germany within the Turkish communities.

Well it is/was like that in Afghanistan and to be honest I don't know if the situation has improved within the last years since the American invasion.

Re: Saudi women with 'tempting' eyes may be forced to cover them

I used to teach young men from Saudi Arabia, who were very open to discuss their culture with me. I loved their stories about flirting. There is gender segregation in public places there, but young people manage to flirt in restaurants using Bluetooth (see an article here). There is naturally a lot of Internet flirting going on. They also told me that at times a Saudi girl’s eyes could communicate more to them than a frivolously dressed (in their eyes) European woman. Imagination cannot be controlled.
I think only locking all women away would achieve what Wahabi enforcers are trying to do. Human needs are universal and they will always find a way for sure.

You didn't imply it? Your post was a response to my post about generally seeing strong family values in the Middle East. Why respond with a rarity?

I'm as horrified as the next person when it comes to the terrifying treatment of women we hear about in the media. But the media is not at all representative of the real Middle East. It's one part but you have to combine this with life among various cultures in the area to truly even start to understand its strengths and weaknesses.

We talk about extremism in only its harmful form while all others are "normal" when it comes to Islam. My life and experience isn't like this at all (for the record, I'm not religious). If I think of my late grandmother, she was very much extreme in her religious views. Harmful? No. Offensive? Probably to an outsider looking in. Indeed, she would not touch something that was just touched by someone of another religion. Yet, she was a dedicated wife and mother who loved her family so dearly I can't even articulate it here.

As a society, we love to cast stones on places we know often know little about except through what we read and watch on television.

The most oppressive place I've lived when it comes to treatment of women is actually Switzerland. Yet, here I adore and embrace the country. What I find restricting is redeemed by what I find so liberating. My point is that you have to experience what is so wonderful about the area in addition to what is terrible before you can cast informed judgment.

Before you call someone ignorant you should check the facts - Families murdering their female members are not rare in the middle east.

Iran; this is the place
where by law they can still stone people to death,
execute gays by hanging from cranes,
over 100 journalists jailed since the 2009 elections.

If you think honour killings are rare in Iran then I suggest you do some research. It is hard to get current figures but, for example, in 2003, it was reported that on average one woman was killed per day in the province of Ilam. The towns Shirvan and Chardoval top the list with 170 honour killings, followed by Darreh Shar with 165, Abadan with 100, Ilam with 50, Mehran with 45 and Ivan with 30.

Seriously. This undermines anything else you've said in this thread, unless you can explain convincingly how Switzerland is more oppressive to women than anywhere else.

Aside from whether I agree or disagree with this statement, since we are all entitiled to our own opinions, I will say that, every single day I wake up, I am most grateful to have been born and now live in countries where I am free to:

1) Cover up my whole body if I want to
2) Wear the skimpiest outfits if I wish to wear them
3) Leave said country if I find it oppressive without the need to beg for permission from my father, brother, or husband if I had one
4) Not being whipped, stoned to death, hanged, or decapitated for any of the above.

1. I am curious as to which other countries you have lived in and are thus comparing with Switzerland.

2. I don't agree with your final comment, for a couple of reasons. Firstly, many of the people ( in this topic, women) do not all get the chance to be a part of what can be the "wonderful" aspects of their areas. Secondly, having experienced the "wonderful" aspects of various countries myself, probably makes me less, not more, qualified to be able to know and empathise with the lives that are endured by many.

Threads about treatment of women in the Muslim world are adorable, if only to see people who are so against moral relativism embrace it all of a sudden when religion is involved.
