I don't agree at all with these points. I'm tired of hearing "If only supermarkets would stock the bad looking apples that taste great......they rule what we eat"

Nonsense.

Shops will sell and manufacturers will produce what consumers want to buy. Consumers lead. Always.

...And to be honest the supermarkets probably have more control here in CH than anywhere else.

Re: At least we Brits lead Europe in something...

Yet, at the end of the day, there is enough good, wholesome, nutritional (and organic) food available in supermarkets for us all to be able to eat a healthy, balanced diet.

Too often I have found myself behind an obese family in the UK with a trolley piled high with burgers, pizzas, processed white bread, swiss rolls and mountains of fizzy drinks.

Then the average consumer is not very wise are they?

For people on low incomes their choice is limited, which part of that is so hard for people to understand?

Not for people on lower incomes, you think they can afford that?

Food labelled organic covers a wide spectrum and not always what you would think is organic.

My best mate back in the UK had a girlfriend who was soooo fat, he told me that when they had sex he used to burn his bum on the lightbulb.
I should also of added that he "confidentially" told me that because she was soooo fat, before sex he used to roll her around in a bath of flour to "find the damp patch".

One of the problems seems to be not that there's a limited choice of foodstuffs for lower income families, but that they don't have a clue about what to do with the things they can afford.
Domestic Sciences are no longer taught in UK schools as a set lesson (it might be as an 'option' in some), so the last two or even three generations no longer have any idea how to cook even the most basic meals.

Honestly: Fast food restaurants as well as the junk food I have seen chav families shop in supermarkets are not at all cheaper than the more healthy options available at the same shops. They are more convenient and have various ingredients that make them taste good as sugar/caffeine/MSG...

"They cannot afford to buy apples, carrots or potatoes instead of frozen pizza, burgers and chips" is really not the point.

No, what I fail to understand is why people choose to spend their money on processed crap when they could fill their trolley with fresh, wholesome food for the same amount (cheap cuts of meat, vegetables, fruit, etc etc).

But they do not have to buy organic. The option is there for those that wish to.

You are what you eat! Plain and simple. There are exceptions but very rare and don't apply to the majority.

In what way is it limited?

There are plenty of in-expensive meats, offal is cheap, and good (in fact we are having minestrone w/tripe for dinner), and there are plenty of in-expensive foods such as root vegetables, pasta and rice.

I fail to see how pre-prepared junk is cheaper.

We are all ultimately responsible for what we eat but consider this:

* Conflicting advice about what is good or bad for you
* Information overload about good nutrition
* Supermarket control over the food chain
* Most food manufacturers are interested in profit not your health
* Government incompetence, this is a national disaster
* Drug, Health and Fitness business sucking off this
All excuses in my opinion. If a thick person like me can grasp things I am sure others can too

The last thing a family on low income can afford, is ready-made meals and take-aways. Cooking simple healthy food is much much cheaper. I used to help with an organisation in the UK that taught mums how to cook healthy simple food, and it was amazing the difference it made - both to health and weight, and to budget.

...snipz...Woodstock...snipz....attractive, slim, fit, health and happy (ok, with a little help in lots of cases!)....snipz..
Well, snorting stuff, copulating and dancing for days will make one pretty fit looking, I wouldn't dare commenting how healthy, though ..Plus, I wonder what gig food the roadies, fans and performers had, probably great. When we gigged, it was always the most traditional, heavy shtick before a gig, since gigs are a pretty decent workout.

I am not sure how much the situ is about unhealthy food choices, nor about exercise (we do have to move, sure), since it seems to me, anyone who ever wanted to lose weight was always the fastest with adjusting portion size to what they actually need. In my experience, most people who aren't happy with their weight eat more than they actually use up or need. Every country has their unhealthy heavy foods that people chow down when socializing and that they are attached to, that's part of national mentality. I think the real deal is to adjust portions, as even fast food or heavy stuff in small quantities is probably ok. And then eat well, move, etc. etc.

( I just scoffed down raclette with pickled garlic olive oil on top at work a few days ago, apart from that being utterly awesome, I never been so ill after raclette before, yikes. I think that was the ultimate heaviest food on earth for me )

The Brit trips of folks coming to Prague for beer extravaganzas or hen parties, they all seem 20kilos heavier than a few years back.
