black friday (day after thanksgiving) all the stores are open late or early with super deals. people camp out for it. I did it once and will never in my life do it again. not worth it
If people act like this over super deals, would hate to see how they will react when they no longer have food on the table...

That's the most probable case for the Swiss army - pacifying civil unrests due to resources shortage, e.g. induced by a natural catastrophic event.

Re: Black Friday - Once again my country descending into disgraceful madness

Looks like it was in a Wal-Mart(?), I'm guessing. And it looks like crowd control was poorly handled at this location. If there's no organization, people are more likely to push and shove in a frenzy to get closer to the front.

I think alot of companies can learn from Apple on how to handle crowd control. When my wife went to get me an iPad2 for my birthday(back in April, when they were 'brand new'), she arrived several hours before the store opened, and there was a roped-off area set up where a line would form every morning. Shortly prior to opening, an Apple employee would walk down the line, asking each person which iPad2 they were trying to purchase. If there was one available in that color & feature combination, the prospective purchaser got a ticket, on which was written the specific iPad2 they were purchasing. Purchasers were limited to 2 per person, and all tickets would be handed out prior to opening. AFTER all this was done, the purchasers were allowed into the building, single-file to pay for their purchases. ONCE they had paid, an employee handed them their merchandise, and they left, single-file. Very orderly, no crushing, no mobbing.

ABsolutely. You put a big box store having a 1-day sale with hugely marked down electronics (we're talking real mark downs, not the typical Swiss idea of a sale where they take 5 francs off an 800 franc itme) but limited supply in some place like Geneva and watch the ensuing mayhem.

This. Dead nuts on. I don't understand why people have problems with businesses in the United States making an honest profit. Swiss businesses would kill to generate revenue like this in a single day.

Not if it involved serving customers ten minutes before closing time, they wouldn't...

I usually don't leave the house all of thanksgiving week but nowadays, who needs to with internet shopping...tax-free, free shipping and asshat-free shopping! It is odd this week I will note, since I had to go to the mall today for the sprog's birthday party coming up, that the mall was crammed to the gills on a sunny weekday afternoon for some unknown reason. And hats off to MA for holding the line on the blue laws and not allowing businesses to open until 12.01 Friday morning so that at least the retail slaves have a chance to enjoy one day with family.

And one way to solve the xmas problem, I tell grownups that gifts are for kids as we are old enough to buy stuff for ourselves without the disappointment factor...unless it is an inspired gift. It saves me and those around me countless hours of shopping hassles and expense. I do still give bottles of wine and boxes of homemade treats though. I wish it were a trend that would catch on.

I've hated the christmas gift thing since I was old enough to know santa wasn't real. I'm keeping the whole holiday cheer thing going for my daughter, but if it weren't for her, I'd put up a tree, make some gloggi and call it good.

@ poptart.

Lol, yeah. I've got a 4 year old and she's looking forward to Christmas and Santa, or what he's called here.

My immediate family on my side lives in Hawaii. Half way around the world. Don't mail us stuff! Too expensive! Thought about gift cards but, wait. NOPE. They sent me a $20 pre-paid visa for my B-day last month. DOH, says only valid in the US! If you're gonna send something for the grand-kid, send cash via paypal.ch pls! =)

We want to make a Costco calendar for them. Figured out if they gave us their Costco # we can upload it to THEIR Costco and they pick it up. Perfect!

Gonna have to bust out the fiber-optic Xmas tree we sent in the container with us. I love that thing! No mess, no scent. Do they sell Pine-sol here? Maybe it'll be a Potpourri Xmas! heh

Oh, gosh, yeah...postage from the Aloha state must be a killer! My MiL still sends stuff for my daughter from Finland and the postage is hair raising. Yankees need to be trained in the art of either sending stuff properly to avoid the duty or find ways to get cash/gift cards that will work in Switzerland. Introduce them to the flat-rate international packages at the USPS as they're the best deal for 99% of what they'll ship and remind them to claim less than $50 value on the goods. (I always told my family to claim $0 and describe it as 'forwarded mail'...but I didn't tell you that. In 20 years, not once did a package get tagged for duty.)

As for pine-sol, no, but I seem to remember a pine oil that might serve well. You might need a step down transformer for that tree, though, or your scent will be that of the blue smoke.

Indeed.

Several years ago I introduced my parents to Amazon gift certificates, rather than checks or sending stuff (checks are very expensive to cash here).

And the great thing is, they don't even need to be pieces of paper or cards of plastic. I send my mom an Amazon gift card for her birthday and it's just an email with a code. She loves it! No paper or card to lose only to find 20 years later in a drawer.

Do the Amazon gift cards work across the regions? I mean, if I bought one from Amazon.de, could my mother use it on Amazon.com, or does it have to bought and used on the same?

Or, since I'd likely use Amazon.com to give something to my mother anyhow, if SHE (or one of my siblings) got me a certificate from .com, would I be able to use it on .de (because the shipping of my selection would be less costly)?

I had an amazon.co.uk giftcard and couldn't use it on amazon.com, so I would guess they are all for use only on the site they are bought from.

To be honest, I don't know. I always buy the gift card for my mom on Amazon.com without a problem. But then again I maintain both a U.S. address and credit card...so maybe it is easier that way? Also we've not tried to do the card the other direction (from her to me).
