The question is, to what extent does/did the Great Leader (old or new) wield any real power, and to what extent is he just a puppet of the old men in the Politburo and the senior party cadres, maybe his only real job it is to be seen at military parades and read the speeches that are written for him?

(which is why he is also called the Beroved Reader)
Top military and party people have a lot of vested interests in stability.

Democratic reform would just make things messy for them. As with any country, being part of the "elite" in North Korea is very lucrative and also many of them have blood on their hands... a LOT of blood. They have a good franchise going, China will also be perfectly happy if things stay nice and stable (to avoid unification which would lead to US forces being right on top of the border line), so it seems that all would benefit (incl. Kim's family clan) from Kim Jong-Un being a good strong leader or puppet with support of the military. Everybody in the 1% can live happily ever after and too bad for the 99% which are suffering (hey, sounds familiar?).

My expectation for coming days/weeks/months:
1) Executions and transportation to forced labor camps for 100s if not 1000s of mid/senior level Koreans who may have said one wrong word, belonged to a wrong family, looked at Kim Jong Un the wrong way, etc. - all to firm up his power base (and instill fear)
2) Sabre rattling by the military towards the South and perhaps Japan (fire some missiles, attack a ship, etc.) to make clear that the transition phase is not a period of weakness for DPRK
3) 6 months (or years...) from now: business as usual in DPRK.

Fascinating live feed (i think) from DPRK TV with sound. Many images awfully similar to those of weeping men, women and children when Hitler ehm "moved on".

Call me crazy, but I can't help but be intrigued by countries like DPRK.

What pictures are those? Hitler killed himself at a time when Germany was in ruins and under allied control. Never heard of a parade or "official" moaning for him.

Don't spoil the fun Treverus. Why should some historical facts prevent somebody from Godwinising this thread?

Wasn't referring to "official" response, but individual reactions. It's well documented that many people had very emotional responses to AH incl. his demise. Whether this was genuine emotion, a result of indoctrination / emotional dependency, fear for the unkown or just fake emotions to be politically correct is an interesting question (also for DPRK).

I think that the "official mourning" in the speech of Gross-Admiral Karl von Dönitz

is enough of this

I have listened to his speech repeatedly over the years, but failed to know whether the man really believed in what he declared

Re: Kim Jong Il has died

The UN held a minute of silence for the dead dictator. Bloody racists - Gaddafi didn't get even a second.

Jimmy Carter & Robert Mugabe
sent condolences.

Not partially, technically.

His grand mother on his mothers side was Jewish so through the maternal line he could claim to be Jewish.
