Mount Etna erupts, again on Mar 18th ( 4th time in 2012 )

Mount Etna is Europe's tallest active volcano and is located in Sicily, Italy. Like many other dangerous volcanoes such as Mount St Helens and Mount Vesuvius, Etna is a composite volcano. It has been created by the Earth's active tectonic plate system – the African plate is moving below the Eurasian plate. As the Eurasian plate moves down into the Earth, it melts. Rising magma erupts at the surface as lava and ash and builds Etna in the process.

Etna has erupted many times during recorded history and is still very active.

Etna and Vesuvio are close to settlements, while the most violent of the three volcanoes in Southern Italy, the Stromboli

is OFFshore and therefore not as much as a problem as the Etna

There last year, impressive and amazing that villages carry on daily business so close to the mountain.

Just realize that the lava from Vesuvio and Etna produces ground for absolutely superb WINES As the real risk is a matter of millenia, most people accept the risk and take the profits

The Stromboli is used as a tourism attraction. A full outbreak there of course would cause real trouble, but there was no such thing for more than 1000 years.

The wealthy people there maintain an apartment or even house in either the Milano or the Lugano or the Engiadina or the Zurigo area to keep everything valuable there, just in case. But prefer to enjoy the good wines and the good climate in their region.

Re: Mount Etna erupts, again on Mar 18th ( 4th time in 2012 )

I was wondering over the smoke cloud this morning on the ride to work, methought it was just another sandcloud from south, read EF and now I know what it was.
This evening the entire horízon had a yellow-ish hue and there is a very slight smoky tinge to the air, Etna is "only" around 300 clicks as the pig rides, so it´s close enough to be noticed even from here.
So this evening I went up to the St Agatha's Tower to see if I could get a picture of the smoke..
