Re: Heavy Earthquake Indonesia 8,9

Just saw the newsflash on the Torygraph website. Isn't that bigger than the 2004 Boxing Day quake?

The revised data for that one was M 9.1 and a duration up to 10 minutes.

Re: Heavy Earthquake Indonesia 8,9

Strange that the alert has ended.

BBC

Quote:
A tsunami watch declared after two major earthquakes off the coast of Indonesia's Aceh province has now been cancelled, the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center (PWTC) says.

Two hours after the quakes - one with a magnitude of 8.6, the other measuring 8.3 - the centre says "the threat has diminished or is over for most areas".

There have been no immediate reports of damage or casualties.

India, Thailand and Sri Lanka have also lifted their own tsunami warnings.

Re: Heavy Earthquake Indonesia 8,9

This was the plates shifting sideways and luckily didn't displace large quantities of ocean, I am led to understand. The large tsunami creating earthquakes are the up/down ones. (well that's how someone tried to explain it to me, in laymans terms)
