The End of an Era

They turned ceefax off?

Before we had the internet, ages were spent waiting for your page to finally come round, and you better remember to hold it lest the next sodding one loaded. Happy days.

Re: The End of an Era

I remember as a kid, before we even had a teletext capable TV, The BBC would broadcast the news pages in the early mornings, and I'd sit glued to to them.

Back in the late eighties I also remember showing a former girlfriends grandfather, who was deaf, how to use teletext to get subtitles (page 888 if I remember rightly). He was so pleased her could now watch TV with his wife and understand what was going on again.

It lasted an incredible 38 years, which as technology goes is a pretty damned good innings.

Re: The End of an Era

I generally access Swiss teletext via internet.

Much faster than using the TV!

They could have changed the font every now and again, it was so eighties.

Arguably the best era since the dawn of the universe.

Re: The End of an Era

I think that it was a oppotunity missed, there was so much room for development, but like BetaMax and Video 2000 it ended as a dinosaur.

Re: The End of an Era

Technically ceefax (the Beeb teletext service) has yesterday switched off in London (like most of the rest of the UK in the last few years as part of the switch over to digital) but it is only "headline" as it was London.

Kent, Northern Ireland and a few other parts of the UK still have access to the service

Also the ceefax gateway at:

http://www.ceefax.tv/

is also still showing that ceefax is not yet dead for all just yet

Re: The End of an Era

As students the highlight of our week was a new quiz on Bamboozle which I think was on channel 4 text.

Re: The End of an Era

When I am in the UK I always like to watch Question Time. I always watch it in analogue as you can read all the texts on ceefax page 155 and they run along the bottom.

In digital - the screen splits and the text runs down half the page - most annoying.

Re: The End of an Era

I mainly used it as a kid to get cinema listings. But my local cinema was always on page 17 of 20 or something, so I'd have to sit there for ages, glued to the screen, to hit "hold" as it came around.

Bamboozle anyone?
Sitting for 1 hour watching 113 pages of holidays to get that deal on page 4.
Pages of football results
Live text for games not on tv-

Ah the memories.

Re: The End of an Era

Pre-Internet, pre-away games being ont' radio, Ceefax was the way to "watch" football live.

It was just like being there*.

*As a Bradford City fan, sometimes Ceefax was more exciting than being there...
