Yeah because NON VIOLENT drug offenses never has violence linked with the drug trade. Poor drug dealer doesn't need to be locked up with real criminals. Since he is only selling the drugs and anything that comes from that is nothing to do with him.
I think your quote speaks rather of consumers then of dealers.

It does. But by selling something that creates so much other crime, it's not fair to say the seller is free from what his drugs gives out.

Fair enough, but you can't equate some otherwise harmless fool with a gram of coke with a dealer who deals in kilograms, is heavily armed and willing to kill to keep or expand his "turf"

I would certainly consider several years of imprisonment for having a few grams of weed as disproportionate, if not "cruel and unusual" I'm no "bleeding heart liberal", but to be effective punishment has to be immediate, unavoidable and proportionate. In the US today it is often none of these.

TD

ps what's this about someone going to jail for looking a policeman in the eye as one poster stated?

Well I agree to proportionate sentencing, but a guy holding a gram of coke, and less even if it's in rock form, will often get the same or harsher sentencing as the kilo dealer, because in fact, crack dealers often are getting far more violent, then the wholesale dealers.

I keep hearing how we have to legalize drugs in the US. I think Marijuana should be, but in a large part it already is. All these other drugs though, the harder ones, shouldn't and should never be. What I don't think people realize is that if we legalize pot, there is going to be drug wars and drug related violence in Mexico, as they will just trade one drug to sell for another. Drug dealers aren't dealers, for the most part, because there is rampant jobs and economic prosperity where they are. It's not just about getting rich, it's about eating, surviving.

I am getting OT.

Re: Prisons for profit

There was a prisons for profit documentary on BBC or Al Jazeera recently. They went into the "voluntary" inmate work programs paying $1.00 per day. Imagine the profit opportunities in that...

...and if inmates are statistically listed as unemployed, yet are working in prison labor programs, what does that mean for US unemployed figures?
