Last chance in a lifetime to witness Venus travel across the face of the Sun

Venus appear as a small dark dot crossing the sun’s face for the last time in this century on June 5-6, 2012. Last transit of Venus in our lifetimes! Get ready.

The transit can only be viewed safely through a solar telescope, solar binoculars or special solar glasses.

Re: Last chance in a lifetime to witness Venus travel across the face of the Sun

Our generation is very fortunate to have two such transits occur in our time. The last transit was in December 2004, the next on June 5th/6th, 2012. Transits don't occur every 8 years. They occur in pairs separated by 8 years with more than a century gap separating each 8 year pair. The next pair of Venus transits occur over a century from now on 2117 Dec 11 and 2125 Dec 08

From NASA:

Quote:
observers in Europe will see the end of the event since the transit will already be in progress at sunrise from those locations.

Re: Last chance in a lifetime to witness Venus travel across the face of the Sun

well, sunrise seems to be at 05:31 in zurich (http://www.timeanddate.com/worldcloc...omy.html?n=268)

hoping clouds would have cleared up, a little bit might be caught, i guess.
otherwise, it would be difficult to book a nice viewing spot for 105 years later

Call me a heathen, but this seems about as interesting as watching paint dry. I don't feel like my life will be less full having missed this event.

Re: Last chance in a lifetime to witness Venus travel across the face of the Sun

A word of warning: to 'view' this event one needs to have a means of projecting an image of the sun onto a screen. Viewing the sun directly especially with a telescope is extremely dangerous.

Yes, but just think of all those dark winter evenings in the distant future
when you will not be able to sit round a roaring open fire and have your
grandchildren excitedly jump up and down, their shiny eyes agog, begging:
" Grandad(ma?)!! ... Please!..Please! tell us again the story on how you witnessed the tiny black dot cross the face of the Sun all those years ago!"

AAAhhhhh!! Memories!!!

Your grandchilden will probably just youtube it instead of hearing your story because you're telling it too slow or blablabla.. and then you'll say "the generation of today...."

Re: Last chance in a lifetime to witness Venus travel across the face of the Sun

It will happen at 10 at night in Geneva as the page says. And Venus will be all inside the sun at 130 in the morning. Very interesting phenomenon but not practical this time

Re: Last chance in a lifetime to witness Venus travel across the face of the Sun

Saw it last time, by focusing the sun through one lense of a pair of binoculars onto a white sheet.

It's quite a strange thing to see. Makes you realise (assuming you're not irremedially parochial ) that you're living in a big universe. It's useful for scientists searching for earthlike planets around other stars, as it allows them to check whether various possible techniques will actually give correct results.
