600 million Indians without power

http://edition.cnn.com/video/?hpt=hp...er-failure.cnn

Trains not running in half the country.
No traffic signals leading to traffic jams.
Hundreds of miners trapped in mines due to power failure.

600 million: that is the size of two USA, the whole population of Europe!

C'mon, really? Is that all you think about when you talk about the country?

I think you'll find they were making a joke. And it's a reflection on *their* country - not India - if you think about it.

I empathize with them. Certainly much longer than the usual summer dry river seasonal power interruptions. I hope it is soon restored.

Still in poor taste IMHO.

Most of the best jokes are.

Besides, despite sounding very bad due to the numbers (in a massively overpopulated county) affected, people weren't too badly affected, including the miners. More massive inconvenience than anything really life-threatening from the looks of it.

No need for being a Drama Llama.

Re: 600 million Indians without power

There's another 600 million Indians who are permanently without power because they scrape by on a CHF or so a day, and people get bent out of shape about the ones who have to spend a day unable to charge their iPhones?

It's a power outage. A very large one, but still just a power outage nonethless. It's ok to make a joke about a power outage.

Re: 600 million Indians without power

One does wonder if perhaps the power infrastructure is under spec and mismanaged for a country of 1.2 billion people.

That's a lot of people btw. One does wonder if a lot of India's problems can be traced back to this one statistic.

Re: 600 million Indians without power

Totally agree:
- India has a drastic lack of infrastructure
- Power outages are common especially in the summers, though nothing on this scale
- Many villages do not have a electricity connection anyway (though not so many when you see percentages)
- Poverty, which means many people cannot afford electricity (maybe not true, a high percentage of poor people do not pay for their electricity, this does not mean that they do not use electricity

Totally disagree:
- Things are close to normal - just imagine - no trains, no metro, traffic jams because of no red lights (okay, road rules are not always respected ), most ATMs not working
- Something like this is not life threatening, some hospitals have been asked to buy power from Bhutan!

I think most of that would come under "massive inconvenience". Only the hospitals part is a worry, and if they buy power then it's still no disaster.

Don't hospitals have their own emergency backup generators anyway, so that at least operating theatres and life-supporting equipment can keep on working?

That's the scary bit actually. Some of the installations I've seen were so hair rasing that I'm surprised massive short-circuits and failures didn't happen more often. I have the impression people tamper with installations with impunity and on a large scale and the authorities are reluctant to do much about it. Of course there is the social aspect that these people are very poor and have no other means of getting electricity, but some of the stuff that is happening is extremely dangerous and poverty should not be an excuse for tolerating suicidal behaviour. I'm surprised we don't hear much about electrocutions but I can imagine a lot of people must die that way. Furthermore, the more people there are who don't pay, the less money there is to actually do proper maintenance. I always felt the power supply in many parts of India was a ticking time bomb.

Re: 600 million Indians without power

if some poor young man or woman does something stupid that results in personal or emotional injury, e.g. hiking into a train tunnel, drinking too much, cutting off a pensioner in line at Migros, not paying attention to signs indicating that a parking spot is private, etc., folks around here are quick to point out the stupidity of the person's action or that person's ignorance of local rules and logic.

but if an entire country tries to service 1.2 billion people and furious economic growth with a third world energy grid that would make the 1940's look like the future, and that "grid" collapses and leaves people without power, it's bad taste to point out the absurd stupidity of the situation or to make a joke about it.

have I got this right?

For those who find the mention of call centres offensive, try Delhi's ice rink...

Re: 600 million Indians without power

Although not offended myself, I think that the point made was that it is a little reductive to think about the country which has 25% of the population of the planet as merely a calling centre hub - so not bad taste, but arguably over-simplistic
