Re: should cyclists have to wear helmets ?

I think all cyclists should wear helmets, but I don't think they should be legally forced.

I do think that under 18s should be forced though.

Re: should cyclists have to wear helmets ?

Can we have a "I can't decide" option? I always wear one and make sure my kids do too, but my libertarian side can't help thinking it's up to the individual to decide for themselves.
Then again, why should emergency services have to deal with clearing up the mess of a crash involving a non-helmeted rider?

As it stands, I politely abstain.

Re: should cyclists have to wear helmets ?

I don't think the flimsy helmets are gonna help when you get run over by a bus or a big truck....

I wear my helmet when I cycle now mainly because I'm more risk averse and don't want to take unecessary risk with absolutely zero rewards.

Re: should cyclists have to wear helmets ?

The problem is right there in the question...

If the question was 'should a cyclist wear a helmet ?' then I'd say 'yes', just like I'd say yes to... 'should i stop eating chips' or 'should i spend more time hiking' etc.

But you're implying ... 'should it be illegal to not wear a helmet ?' and that's were the problem starts... (legislation costs, enforcement costs, governance costs (because someone will have to define a legal 'helmet') etc. etc.) so, wearing my libertarian helmet, I voted 'no'

p.s. the old argument about 'what about the cost to society, cleaning up after irresponsible non-helmeted riders ?' doesnt really stack up in my books.. they're there to treat accident victims... and the number of bicycle accidents - with head injuries - must be minute compared to all the other accidents that could be averted if the necessary preventative measures where put in place (no cars without airbags, no skiing - ever, no motorbikes - ever, all pedestrians to be wrapped in cotton wool)

My thought too.

But then, why should they have to asisst people who were injured due to dangerous driving or excessive drinking?

These are also personal choices.

Libertarian thinking only works to a point, and after that it's still up to others to clean up.

Re: should cyclists have to wear helmets ?

as someone who loves bikes, I wish they would start by forcing cyclists to obey the rules of the road and to stop riding in city traffic with iPods on. far too often I come across cyclists who seem to view themselves as cars when it suits them and likewise as pedestrians when it suits them.

helmets are great and all, but they will never be a substitute for good judgment.

Re: should cyclists have to wear helmets ?

As the avatar might indicate, I'm going to side with the cyclists.

It's a simple safety measure and should be common sense. A bit like seatbelts.

The snag is it's only common sense...there is not enough scientific evidence to prove it one way or the other. At least seatbelts were proveably good at saving lives.

Much as I love the idea of helmets being compulsory, I can't give any scientific reason as to why it should be.

I'm not sure I can believe there is no evidence for this. In this case, why is wearing a helmet on a Vespa / Motorbike compulsory? Whilst in town, cyclists are often going at higher speeds than I am on a 300cc Vespa and if we hit/were hit by anything larger than another motorbike (i.e. most stuff) the impact and results would be pretty similar.

I remember in the USA that the Hell's Angels organised a mass ride with no helmets to protest the new law there, and one inevitably crashed and died of a preventable head injury. That really sums it up for me, if you don't wear one, you are a bit of a funkwit, and aren't just risking your life, but risk ruining the life of someone who bumps into you and turns what would have been a painful scratch into manslaughter. It is selfish on so many levels not to wear a helmet, so just do it eh?

The problem is those low speed falls when you are wearing your helmet, you fall off your bike, bang your head and you get up, shout at the driver who made you swerve and you carry on your journey.

If you hadn't been wearing a helmet, you may have had a hospital visit, been knocked unconscious, been in a coma or died.

There's no way of recording that in these cases, the wearing of a helmet saved an injury.

Re: should cyclists have to wear helmets ?

We did this quite recently, and the previous thread has been linked to already (should they be merged, perhaps?), but some of the 'obvious', but not correct, points were covered in some detail by study documents mentioned therein.

So I won't join in the discussion again, except to quote a precis of the relevant thoughts among many (UK) cycling groups:

- Cycling is very good for you: the fitness benefits massively
outweigh crash risk.

- Cycling isn't dangerous; it's as safe per mile as walking.

- Helmets put people off cycling, which makes people less healthy
so promoting and mandating them is a public health own goal.

- Population studies show that helmets don't help much, if
at all, in the kinds of crashes people worry about.

- We need to work on improving driver behaviour to make cycling
more pleasant and encourage more people to cycle.

It isn't recorded, but that doesn't mean it can't be scientifically proven.

I suggest buying two lovely ripe watermelons and putting a helmet on one and not on the other, then dropping them on the curb. I think the result is probably as much science really needs to be expended proving such an obvious concept.

That's the nub of it though, isn't it? It doesn't matter what people think about, it matters in the fact that wearing a helmet has no negative health effects and has plenty of lifesaving positives.

Just because people don't worry about falling off their bike and banging their head on the curb, doesn't mean it doesn't happen, it just means they don't think about it.

Only that experiment doesn't take into account factors such as

- decreased hearing or awareness due to wearing helmet that may be contributory to accident.
- increased taking of risks due to perceived invulnerability due to wearing helmet.
- potential abstention from cycling due to people not liking helmets, driving instead, and posing an additional risk for cyclists with helmets.

Can I suggest you re-read the other thread and the studies it linked to? Or just read the wikipedia article.

You'll see that there are many possible negative effects too, both in terms of actually wearing one and the effect that a law may have on population health trend.
