Re: A shooting just happened in ( *fill in the blank * )

Tonight, it's Nice, Nizza. A "mad lorry" as it was described in the news just a second ago. At least 60 dead, probably more, just happened. Terrorism. Paris was too well protected, still, they found a way.

No hostage taken according to interior ministery right now on twitter but the info/rumor was to be found on social media in the past half hour indeed.

Baton Rouge, again. Three cops are thought to be shot dead.

No idea if this plot was related. The timing seems to imply so.

And now we present the latest variation: an axe attack:

Let's just hope that doesn't mean we can look forward to pat-down searches when entering regional trains.

Re: A shooting just happened in ( *fill in the blank * )

North Miami.

WTF
Quote:
When a 23-year-old autistic man carrying a toy truck wandered from a mental health center out into the street Monday, a worker there named Charles Kinsey went to retrieve him.

A few minutes later the autistic man was still sitting cross-legged blocking the roadway while playing with the small, rectangular white toy. And Kinsey was prone on the ground next to him — a bullet from an assault rifle fired by a police officer having struck his leg.

“He throws his hands up in the air and says, ‘Don’t shoot me.’ They say lie on the ground, so he does,” Kinsey’s attorney Hilton Napoleon said Wednesday. “He’s on his back with his hands in the air trying to convince the other guy to lie down. It doesn’t make any sense.”

'I was thinking as long as I have my hands up, they're not going to shoot me.This is what I'm thinking, they're not going to shoot me. Wow, was I wrong.'

'And I'm saying, 'Sir, why did you shoot me?' and his words to me were, 'I don't know.''

Unfortunately there is a huge number of army vets recruited straight into US police forces over the past few years and it seems it's hard to untrain trained killers.

I think even in the army, you wouldn't do that.

Failing to accept a surrender when it is safe to do so is actually a war crime under the Geneva convention. If they acted like that in the army they could be hauled before a tribunal pretty quickly.

My step-son did two tours in the Balkans, and never shot anyone.

It also counted towards his Swiss obligation (as well as paid well), and he was out at 27!

Well, there is a difference between making a thought process and actually be a target in a war. The tiny number of prosecuted and even tinier of convicts in US army tells a lot about their attitude to such nuances.
A suspected ambush could explain it.

It's the way police are trained in the U.S., which I think is quite flawed.

First, the dispatchers relay what callers say to the cops. So if some random caller claims the guy has a gun and is suicidal, that's what the cops believe before they even arrive on the scene. Some crazy person who wants revenge on a spouse calls 911 and says the spouse has a gun, then the cops are prepared for shooting. Officers receive very little training on how to assess situations before grabbing guns. Instead, they're mostly taught that every situation could be a deadly one.

Second, although most police now carry tasers in addition to guns, the training they receive leans toward using the more deadly approach. The idea being that if your (the cop's) life is in danger then deadly force is appropriate. Even someone holding a knife 20 feet from a cop can be shot 50 times because he's "threatening" or "would not drop the weapon". American police are trained to shoot to kill. They practice a lot. This guy in Miami is lucky the cop only shot him in the leg.

I'd like to see a drastic shift in training techniques, which would hopefully lead to a reduction in twitchy fingers.
