To provide a bit of balance to my posts on this thread:

My ten year old wants to do shooting in the summer with his ferienpass.
(small bore and air rifle).

I'm more than happy to let him do this.

I'm not anti-gun as they serve a purpose in the world we live in.

Our son did this one year too.

It was very interesting and useful in teaching them about gun safety and appropriate uses.

Re: A shooting just happened in ( *fill in the blank * )

The Monty Python of terror

According to today's newspapers here it seems that an Algerian man in Paris managed to shoot himself in the leg. He called an ambulance and the crew called the police.
The police found automatic weapons and bulletproof vests in his car and his apartment.

It is believed he was planning a terrorist attack!

Sometimes life is stranger than fiction.

Re: A shooting just happened in ( *fill in the blank * )

Two gunmen shot and killed by police in Texas, quote here.

Seems a group was holding a "Draw a cartoon of Mohammed" contest in a building in Garland , Texas when a car drew up outside. Two men stepped out and started shooting at an unarmed security man.
The police intervened and shot both of them. Due to the risk of bombs the bodies were left in the street while police checked the area so nobody yet knows who they were.

I can understand that Muslims would find the event offensive but if this was the reason for the shooting then I find forcing people outside of a religion to follow that religions rules is not acceptable.

For example, I eat beef but I do not expect Hindu's to shoot at me, I mean suppose that was a beef eating contest?

I sometimes work on Saturdays which is the Jewish holy day but I do not expect Jews to shoot at me.

There are very many different religions; imagine the state we would be in if we were at risk every time we failed to follow one of these religions rules - which often conflict with other religion's rules.

Don't you find hosting a Mohammed-cartoon drawing contest (albeit humorous) a bit more provocative than eating a hamburger on a Saturday? I'm not saying that it deserves such a response but still.

Shouldn't this be attached to the Charlie Hebdo thread? It has more in common with that afterall.

I do not find either provocative since I do not belong to either religion.
I find such rules quaint and old fashioned and completely at odds with our modern world.

I am not qualified to say if eating a hamburger on a Saturday is better or worse but it certainly offends against a basic tenet of at least one religion.

Possibly, I was wondering about that.
However there is no evidence yet it was a religious related attack (although the speculation is that it was) and it does not have any obvious link with Charlie.

I certainly admit that I do not belong to any religion but if other people want to have an imaginary friend that is fine with me.
When nut jobs take it to the extreme of killing people who have offended their imaginary friend then I certainly do not understand their thoughts and feelings, maybe you do?

I assume it was supposed to be provocative. In fact I can't imagine any other motivation.

These guys just rose to the bait. What a stupid way to throw away your life.

Of course I don't condone the shooting but I can't imagine why you couldn't see that the drawing competition was at all provocative.

Aside from the shooting, if you ran into an American church on a Sunday and shouted out "Evolution is fact!!!" you may just get lynched.

About "I assume it was supposed to be provocative."
Indeed, in which case both sides achieved some objectives but at the price of human life. I assume there was a heavy (maybe hidden?) police presence so they stood no chance anyway of killing anyone.

If the Nutjobs were true believers they would leave it to their Boss to strike down the offenders or send them to Hell for a thousand years or whatever is the Punishment du Jour.
That is the problem with any kind of direct action, there is a clear implication of lack of belief. Unless they heard voices, of course, which would be a different symptom

Oh, Crusaders did it in the 1800s, so it must be okay.

About "Thank God", you thank their God that made them incompetent or are you thanking a different one?

But it was this pair that ran to this conference with the purpose of shooting it up. If they'd ran in and shouted "Allahu Akbar", they wouldn't have been lynched, rather laughed at. Your comprison makes no sense.
