Impossible to implement. There would be riots, standoffs, sieges. Old guns would not be melted down into monopoly pieces - rather old monopoly pieces would be melted down into bullets.
people aren't calling for guns to be banned in the USA, they are saying lets have some common sense, assault rifles, semi auto's, no checks, no limits etc are a bad thing

A gun is not at all a feat of engineering.
Your ignorance, in all it's glory.

It's hard to name another piece of machinery that has had more influence in shaping the world we live in today.

Just answer this one question:

If access to guns in the US were severely curtailed, due to a ban on the sale, purchase and possession of guns, how would guns be used to kill people?
Guns are everywhere, especially in the States. And would still be so after a ban. Even if they were banned, people who really want them would still be able to get their hands on them. That simple.

But some are...and the extremists from the 'ban all guns' camp motivate the extremists from the 'arm myself to the teeth before they ban all guns' camp, and vice versa.

I'm curious why you are using the word "ban" in practically every post you write?

It's clear (and has been pointed out many times) that most people are talking about controlling the gun ownership. Is that what you interpret as a ban?

What do you see as wrong in restricting mentally ill people from owning guns? People on no-fly lists? Convicted criminals?

These people are not allowed to keep guns in most of Europe and we don't have anything like the level of massacres here.

Curious to know what your position is on controls for risky people owning dozens of assault weapons rather than slightly impotently going round and round in circles about antiques and bans.

that doesn't make it a feat of engineering though, does it???

Take the wheel for instance, probably mans greatest invention, but hardly a technological marvel.

all told a gun is a pretty simple device, well engineered but hardly a feat of engineering.

no they wouldn't, I remember gun club members in the uk back in the 90's saying such rubbish, the vast majority of people are law abiding, you'll never stop criminals who want them getting guns, but simple control would have meant this massacre never happened, or most of the massacres in recent history.

you really think john doe accountant would risk a criminal record, prison, losing his job just because he fancies owning an illegal firearm? one he'll never be able to show anyone, or shoot anywhere???

Anyhow, the pen is merely an extension from cavemen drawing on walls. Hardly a piece of engineering with a new use.

By that logic a gun is just an extension of a pea shooter, right?

The point of firing full auto is not to be accurate; its to fire so many bullets that accuracy is no longer required. Maximum damage, maximum firepower, maximum collateral damage.
If the weapons had been left as semi-automatic, would the number of fatalities been higher even though fewer bullets were fired? Hate to be morbid, but my ex father-in-law had 1,000 and 2,000 yard sniper 'awards' from his time in the army, so am I right to believe someone more accustomed to shooting would have had a far higher hit rate in the same scenario?

The paradox is remarkable, isn't it?
Just testing the waters here.

If we could broker a deal.

The right stops trying to control abortion.
The left stops trying to control guns.

No ifs and buts.
Freedom wins both ways, right?

Would you sign up for it?

The political parties wouldn't of course, because both topics are enormous vote winners and its very easy to push the right buttons, get people emotional and angry and they vote for you blindly, ignoring all the other evil stuff you want to do.

But suppose we took those buttons away from them.

Good grief, back to school it is? Was the pea shooter ever able to enslave a continent?

The pen/pencil/whatever made the transfer of information easier. Paper also had a role to play. But the real technology breakthrough was the invention of the alphabet and numbers. The development of the pen in regards to transfer of knowledge was the Printing Press. Which is also a feat of engineering.

Nope you were comparing the engineering evolution of the pen from the caveman daubing on a cave wall all the way up to the fountain pen.

All things being equal, your logic can then be applied to weaponry (flinging stones at each other, catapults, bows and arrows, rudimentary rifles, etc., etc., AK-47).

Daubing on a cave walls wouldn't have brought about the works of Shakespeare in as much as a pea shooter wouldn't have enslaved a continent.

Acorns to oak trees...

'The pen is mightier than the sword'

But that doesn't mean the sword is irrelevant.

There's a reason that the US constitutional amendments start with freedom of speech, and then onto the right to bear arms. These were/are seen as the 2 most important things to secure democracy.
