There never was, it's just that we hear about them more and more with internet, etc. A couple of hundred years ago it would have taken months for information from the States or Egypt or Australia to reach us. Now it happens with a click of a button.

I think this somehow de-sensitizes us to such news, unfortunately. Our collective attention spans are so short, we click the headline, shake our heads, and move on (unless we or someone we know was affected).

Bellach SO. Night from Monday to Tuesday.

After neighbors reported a shot, police found the dead body of the 54 year old flat owner. One suspect on scene arrested. Investigation still ongoing.

Two and a half months later and there's still no idea on what the Las Vegas shooters motive was. Unbelievable really.

Guess we just have to make up our own reason:

Re: A shooting just happened in ( *fill in the blank * )

Meanwhile, proceedings in congress:

Concealed Carry Reciprocity
This proposition allows gun owners with a concealed carry permit to carry their arms in other states as if they were in the state the permit has been issued by. It passed the House recently to be debated in the Senate.

Reportedly the bill includes provisions that would make the law enforcement officers personally liable for mistakenly enforcing concealed carry laws. "A permit holder can sue a police officer for being wrongly arrested, stopped, or even asked to produce documentation — and also recover attorney’s fees"

In a previously separate move, laws that improve the background checks and ban "bump stocks" are still to be debated by the Senate. Bump stocks are devices that enable semi-automatic weapons to fire almost at the speed of fullly automatic weapons. (I think fully automatic weapons are banned unless produced multiple decennials ago, before the eighties or something). Now, the GOP has created a poison pill by combining These three part into one package, not surprisingly many are infuriated.

In a separate move, the NRA is trying to legalise gun suppressors aka silencers (part of the "Sportsmen’s Heritage and Recreational Enhancement Act"). Law enforcers fear that allowing silencers will make it much more difficult to locate the shooter. Oh and nevermind that this bill would also make it more difficult to classify ammunition as "armor piercing", which seems to automtically make it banned.

The mind boggles.

I've been following this discussion too.

Somehow I can't imagine that it will fly.

For starters, it sounds like a violation of the 10th amendment.

Conservative judges like to defend the 10th amendment. Liberal judges don't like guns. So I can't image much smpathy from the Supreme Court.

Depends on your interpretation I guess. After all it's not federal law that's reciprocated but state law. And I doubt it would have passed the House without much publicity if was clearly against the 10th, or against the constitution in general.

With that said, I'd like to see it repealed if it does become law.

It's federal law abridging state law. To me that's very much against the 10th.

Maybe it's also against the 14th. But that's a more tricky one to argue.

At the moment it is still a proposal as far as I am aware. I expect this will cause a big storm if it is passed.

Re: A shooting just happened in ( *fill in the blank * )

Not a big deal at all. Reciprocity isn't new, and it won't change my current ability to carry concealed in other states that honor my TN permit (39 states in total).

Personally, I'm against the new law, because once the federal govt gets involved, they are going to F it up.

My state requires 8 hours of class and range time, a knowledge and marksmanship test, a criminal background check and fingerprints prior to issue. The class was taught by active duty police officers and it was about 60% male, 40% female. It is admittedly more stringent than other states, but that is why all other states that allow civilian CCW honor it.

One benefit to the police - any traffic stop made on a CCW permit holder will flash on their screen when they call in the plate - so they know before approaching the vehicle a weapon may be present in the car. More importantly, the driver is most likely a law abiding citizen. As the trainer said, "not a lot of criminals apply for a CCW."

Re: A shooting just happened in ( *fill in the blank * )

I'm speechless. What is WRONG with these people !

"A man has been arrested after an alleged "swatting" prank call led to police shooting dead a 28-year-old man.

Andrew Finch was shot at his front door on 28 December in Wichita, Kansas.

Police surrounded the home after receiving a hoax emergency call from a man claiming to have shot dead his father and taken his family hostage.

The call stemmed from a row between two gamers playing Call of Duty online, US media say, although the address raided was apparently unconnected to either.

Police have said they believe the report was an act of "swatting" where a person makes a false report to send police to another person or fake address.

'Innocent victim'

Audio of the emergency call has been made public. A man can be heard telling authorities that he had shot his father in the head, and claimed to have taken his mother and siblings hostage.

The caller also said he had a handgun and had poured fuel over the house and wanted to set the property on fire.

Police say they surrounded the address the caller had given, and were preparing to make contact with the suspect reportedly inside when Mr Finch came to the door.

They said one round was released by officers after the 28-year-old failed to comply with verbal orders to keep his hands up, and appeared to move his hands toward his waist multiple times.

Police say Mr Finch was later found to be unarmed, and was pronounced dead at a local hospital. A search found four of his family members inside, none of them dead, injured or taken hostage.

His family told local media that he was not involved in online gaming.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

What is swatting?
◾The false reporting of emergencies, in order to try and get a Swat (Special weapons and tactics) team response to a location
◾It has been linked to disputes in the online gaming community
◾Perpetrators often disguise their number or call non-emergency local numbers to avoid being identified

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

"The irresponsible actions of the prankster put people and lives at risk," said Wichita Police Department Deputy Chief Troy Livingston.

"The incident was a nightmare for everyone involved, including the family and our police department.

"Due to the actions of a prankster, we have an innocent victim. Had the false police call not been made, we would not have been there.

"We don't see it as a joke, it's not a prank. It heightened the awareness of the officers, and we think it led to this deadly encounter."

US media reports that a dispute over a game led to one gamer threatening another with a "swatting", who then gave the first gamer a fake address. That address was then reportedly given to a third person, a known online "swatter", who allegedly made the emergency calls.

UMG Gaming, the online platform where the Call of Duty game was being played competitively for a small cash wager, released a statement saying they would work with the investigating authorities.

Tyler Barriss, 25, was arrested by police in Los Angeles on Friday in relation to the investigation.

Local reports say Mr Barris had previously been charged with making bomb threats to a local television station in 2015.

Social media accounts reportedly linked to the incident have been suspended after a series of posts were made about the shooting."

Just another Second Amendment story
And just to round off the year.

"A US teenager has been arrested after his family were found shot dead in their home on New Year's Eve.

Police responded to a report of shots fired at a house in Long Branch, New Jersey, shortly before midnight.

On arrival, they discovered the suspect's father, mother, sister, and a family friend had all been killed.

"It appears the 16-year-old boy used a Century Arms semi-automatic rifle", a statement from the Monmouth County prosecutor said.

The teenager, whose name was not released, was taken into custody without incident."
