As an American, I'd respond by saying that this thread (or, say, the headline that is certainly up at The Onion by now) is symptom, not a cause, of any banalization of all this shooting. The issue of guns in American is complex, in some ways
Too complex for Americans, perhaps. Every other country seems to manage.

(Unless you want to compare the U.S. with Somalia and Yemen).

Now I'm going to get groaned by the forum freaks...

The New York Times demonstrates AGAIN that is perfectly straightforward. There is no wiggle room. America has more mass murders by gun mainly because it has many more guns, but also because it has lax gun laws. End of story. They made their choice.

How come the shooter in a gay club in Florida was branded a terrorist but the shooter in a school in Florida is not?

Are you asking me if I am a bit thick, after having decided to ignore the result of strict gun controls introduced in Australia and the UK, as pretty much everywhere else in the Western Civilization?
I mean, I understand why you would say that "the US is not Germany!" or "the US is not Denmark!", but Australia is like the US with a funnier accent.

Re: A shooting just happened in ( *fill in the blank * )

When the Black Panthers openly asserted their constitutional rights back in the sixties and seventies all kinds of gun control measures were rapidly implemented.

Maybe if the BLM movement got better organised and stopped pissing about, armed their members and marched openly in towns with heavy NRA membership, according to their constitutional rights, there might be a change of heart amongst voters.

It'll never happen, though.

The situation over there seems to be so extreme and twisted that you find yourself musing on the NRA's suggestion of arming teachers. And then sanity returns and you conclude that the solution to guns isn't more guns.
It's all about selling guns.

.....
When i heard the news, i didn't think, 'oh my god, what the hell is going on?'...

I thought 'huh, its in Florida this time...'

Truth is, I've gotten so used to headlines about dead kids in american schools, that it doesn't have the impact it should anymore.

We are 6ish weeks into 2018. There's been 18 school shootings. roughly 3 per week.

3 times per week that someone goes into a school with the intention and means of killing children.

If you're still shocked and surprised when this happens, you're lying to yourself.
Can't say I've gotten used to these headlines. But sick and tired of the outraged voices on the news, the consternated voices of the US politicians as if this was a God given thing and nothing they can do about it.
My thought was a resignated "yeah, well, that's how it is if you don't do anything about it". Which is bad enough, I admit.

I think it's the upbringing. The ideas and ideals which are passed on to the youngsters. The "I come first and if you don't do as I like I'll get rid of you" attitude. But I agree, it would be a lot easier (or at least a start) to change the laws.

When I watch the world, this attitude is spreading (not only in the US apparently ) and trying to influence societies who don't have that background. How much longer until the "shoot the smokers, loud neighbours, other drivers, "Fastnächtler", pro-Billag people .... anything disliked has to go. Very strange attitude where I come from.

Yes, you're right. Strict gun laws keeps them at least a little in check.

If you have fair practice with changing the magazine there's no way swapping the gun could be faster. At least not with a big magazine like the 24-shot used by the Swiss army.

And this is what " respectable " citizens in the USA need to defend their homes?

I fully support the rights of Americans to bear arms in keeping with the 2nd Amendment of 1791.
The question is musket or flintlock?

I read a comment thread where gun nuts actually tried to justify the 2nd amendment not only being applicable to the typical weaponry at the time, but would also apply to future weapon development. Simply because some of the signatories had tried or "were aware" of primitive gatling-gun devices.

To be fair, you can't overthrow a tyrannical 21st century government with 18th century firearms.

When I see the riot police go in, mounted on horseback and with wicker shields, helmets, vizors and batons, I can't help but thinking this is a very Dark Age method of fighting.

I would love to see a divison of riot police match Genghis Khan and his Huns and see who has the better technique.

I know a guy in Denmark who does reenactments and studies Dark Age and Middle Age military weapons and strategies. He says he would love to confront a divison of mounted riot police one day - even from the infantry position - as he says they make so many basic tactical errors.

It's a good thing for them that the average yobbo or football holligan doesn't read many history books or care much for reenactment.
