It does seem a bit odd if people raised in the UK or other non-US western democracies are expressing pro-gun views, unless it's a case of being on the right of the political spectrum and therefore automatically supporting the US conservative view on US issues.
guns have a place in the world, I have no problems at all with people owning them, there are legitimate uses for them, and target shooting is fun, but no one NEEDS an auto / semi auto assault weapon, no one needs bump stocks, no one need high capacity magazines etc etc its not an attack on someones freedom to limit them to a single shot rifle or 6 shot hand gun ffs.

Agreed.

The press and the public are engaged in tarring and feathering him - I'm a bit surprised that Trump hasn't tweeted about his cowardice yet.

It wasn't a Bruce Willis film.

My bet is that SOP is to call for a response team, take cover and try to figure out what is happening, how many shooters, where they are, what weapons they have, etc, etc.

If the shooter appears and there is a clean shot which doesn't endanger anyone else, then take that shot.

Anyone notice how few collateral casualties there are when something like this happens? That's because the police train not to react like it's a Bruce Willis film.

In spite of what many would like to believe, the fact is that very, very, few policemen anywhere train to respond to this kind of a situation. And their response is not like Hollywood portrays it.

The response is understand the situation first (in this case hopefully based on the report from the single officer at the scene), then take control with sheer numbers. Even with training, this takes time.
Meanwhile at least one unarmed teacher rescued students, took them outside to safety and then went back in to rescue more.

Maybe it's a part of the bigger issue.

A lot of men are simply too soft these days to the point that they act like girls.
I'd pay to watch you say that to Ronda Rousey.

Or they are from Switzerland, Austria, Italy, France, Norway, etc.

Stlemans - your insistence on groaning every post I make on this forum is getting a little tedious.

I notice that you don't add anything worthwhile at all on this except to show off how clever you are or you mention how things are done by you in Ticino even if that's totally irrelevant to someone's request in Zurich.

Are you such a bore in real life too?

disagree - its because generally the shooter kills themselves, usually just as the police arrive or shortly after. This most recent one is pretty rare.
By "collateral casualties" I meant bystanders/students other than the shooter.

Bad enough that people are being shot, friendly fire won't improve things. (Only one of the problems with arming teachers.)

It's Friday, and you are spouting rubbish (as usual).

Cigarettes, guns, trans-fats, what's next?

It would seem to be a bit strange if arming teachers does go ahead to declare that there are three professions in the U.S. where you get paid to shoot people (Armed forces, Police, and teachers).

I wonder how many wackos sign up to be teachers for that?

All that it needs is an armed teacher to go on an amok shooting spree

Well exactly, there are enough people who appear to have started teaching just so they can abuse kids.

It wouldn't take much of a stretch in imagination for a few trigger-happy types to get involved in teaching for other reasons.

In no way, shape or form am I pro-gun, but I realise that it's so ingrained into the psyche of a large proportion of Americans, that the issue needs to be treated with kid gloves and baby steps. I fear that the backlash to any sweeping new laws would cause a number of casualties far higher than the one's we wish could have been prevented over the last 20yrs.

With any weapons restriction, the most successful first steps are to withdraw an article from the market, and have an amnesty or trade-in.

Torturing small animals (which is a trait that almost every psychopath has)?

Oh, no, that's something you have announced with glee on this forum that you have done.

If statistics is anything to go by, shouldn't be allowed anywhere near a firearm.

If the NRA was smart and went at this strategically, they would approve a stepwise ban on a limited number of weapons types. This would give them the ability to say, "look we are the reasonable ones, we compromised here", and if the anti-gun folks then start asking for more, it makes it more difficult for them to caricature the NRA as being totally uncompromising. Rather it would feed into the NRA's "thin edge of the wedge" argument.

I passed through there only two hours ago and my only thought was 'F*** it's windy". Worrying and unusual when this happens so close to home.

When?

The only thing I do with small animals is eat them, and they are already dead at the time.
