The BBC is reporting that the Jacksonville suspect, David Katz, had a history of mental illness requiring medication going back more than 10 years. Yet he purchased two guns legally.

It was exactly 18 months ago today that Congress passed a bill, signed into law by Trump, revoking a regulation introduced by the Obama administration that added further hurdles for people with mental illness to buy a gun. In other words, Trump made it much easier for mentally ill people to buy guns. What comment does he have today, now that at least two mass shootings have been committed in Florida alone by mentally ill people (one diagnosed by Trump himself!) since that time?
When did he buy the guns?

Tom

Do you not consider American football to be a violent sport?

I don't know, but I'm guessing it was after he was diagnosed as mentally ill (he was diagnosed before the age of 14, given that his mental illness was mentioned more than once in his parents' divorce proceedings in 2007).

Why, what's your point? My point is that it's ridiculously easy for mentally ill people in the USA to acquire guns—even more ridiculously easy after Trump swept away what flimsy barriers there were.

That's not apparent. But according to NRA spokeswoman Dana Loesch the ATF says they were legally bought in MD (which means with at least one month between the two purchases as that's required in MD). If you search enough for the ATF info you may be able to find the dates.

Those interested in the details may want to read her tweets. It's a bit of a puzzle as the details are spread over quite a few tweets but at least you don't need to check a thousand newspaper articles.

After, because he purchased the guns in August of this year. BUT... it's more nuanced than that.

The "change" Trump made was back in February 2017. He rescinded an order that Obama had put in place near the end of his term. However, according to Snopes, the Obama-era rule never went into effect before it was rescinded.

Even the ACLU and many mental health professionals opposed Obama's rule, saying it put a stigma on mentally ill people, and that being mentally ill doesn't necessarily make one more violent.

Re: A shooting just happened in ( *fill in the blank * )

You all seem to be missing the point. To me, it's unimportant whether the guy bought the guns during the Obama administration or during Trump's, while additional restrictions (whether ever imposed or not) were in place or afterwards.

The point is, someone with mental illness—which has resulted in mass murder—was able to purchase guns legally. I couldn't care less how offended some politically correct people may get; clearly, mentally ill people should not be entrusted with guns. How many more demonstrations of this truth are needed? The last thing that is needed in this situation is erosion of protections put in place to prevent access by mentally ill people to guns!

Why is this so difficult to comprehend? If a supposedly leftist, socialist president was able to push through such legislation in the face of bleeding heart liberals' objections, why on Earth can't a right-wing, hard-line president stay the line?!

....and we'll be back to square one: guns don't kill people, people kill people! Wanna bet? I'm waiting for the folks who were bragging about their inherited gun collection and superior family pedigree they have to protect to pop up and defend American rights.

Only if you're a big jessie who can't take a tackle without wearing a suit of armour and can only run for 10 seconds at a time without needing a commercial break.

Re: A shooting just happened in ( *fill in the blank * )

Given the amount of guns floating around in the US and given the amount of people on psychotropic drugs, I'd say there's an unhealthy mixture and disasters waiting to happen if you mix the two.

A lot of these drugs make you unsafe for driving.
How the hell is it OK to own a gun but be not allowed to drive a vehicle or operate heavy machines?

It's not about violence, it's more about judgment and mental stability.

There were certainly objections to the restrictions on gun ownership for mentally ill people. See 3Wishes' post, below. It may be a stretch on my part to brand them "bleeding heart liberals".

Given that 3000 odd dead Puerto Ricans is an "A+" result, you are most probably right.

This thread seems to have missed this one:

Maryland shooting: Woman kills three and turns gun on herself

Now depressingly banal, the only thing of note here is the gender of the gunwoman: according to the article only 5% of mass-shootings are carried out by women.
