Re: A shooting just happened in ( *fill in the blank * )

Telling comment here from James Cook, the Beeb's correspondent:

"For this city, it has been a day of panic and chaos, as people struggle to cope with America's worst mass shooting in three years. By one measure though, there has been more than one mass shooting on average every day this year.

In that respect this was just another day in the United States of America."

http://www.bbc.com/news/world-us-canada-34991855

Extremely unlikely to change in the future I'm afraid. Americans seem to love their guns too much.

Thats a ridiculous comment. Not that I expected anything else. But to give you an idea of some of the comments after the San Bernardino massacre:

Armed Citizens Deter Terrorist Attacks In Detroit, Police Chief Says
Sheriff Arpaio calls on 250K armed citizens to stop terrorism and mass shootings
Coming to a state near you the "I thought he looked a bit like a muslim" defense.

Those shooters were not real and proper gun owners.
at least according to the media reports, they were the lawful owners of every weapon used in the attack. or do you define "real and proper" differently?

and I guess Phos will be along in a moment to tell us how if everyone in Egypt had a gun this wouldn't have happened. Or how these were not real and proper bomb owners.

The US should clearly invite the Turkish Air Force to patrol their skies. Anyone with a beard / a scarf / brown skin / Russian accent / foreign looking that is seen to be within 17 seconds of a potential incident provoking scenario would be taken down.

When I read Phos's posts on here, I understand how someone like Donald Trump is so popular in the U.S.

I cannot understand his stance on this by putting myself in his shoes - it just seems wrong on so many levels.

The only way I could explain it as that he believes he is getting his guidance from his God or something else.

Sorry Phos - I appreciate my opinion doesn't actually matter in the grand scheme of things but I find your views totally disheartening.

How and why can one legally buy assault weapons in the US? I can't fathom the logic.

You'll find a picture of the assault weapons used here:

The other thing you have trouble fitting into your heads is that I am not espousing an opinion, you guys are. I'm simply telling you factual information that gun control is too late for the US. The San Bernardino couple had an array of bombs with them. They aren't your "moderate" gun owners, nor "moderate" muslims, they were terrorists.

In response, a lot of law enforcement officials themselves are advising people to carry their guns with them, to help with such situations. This is an admission that they cannot protect their own citizens.
http://www.nydailynews.com/new-york/...icle-1.2454210

But you guys can't fathom that reality beyond your opinion, could you. But I'm not the one with their head up their ass in this conversation. I'm simply telling you what the people in that situation are doing.

Guess what? I don't think they nor anyone else really cares about your opinions. Your opinions are not mattering much, are they?

I see - you're a politician

If you seriously don't believe the US would be a better place with less gun (and non-gun) violence then it really doesn't surprise me either that Trump is running for president.

The other day's shooting just gave Donald Trump a huge jolt of credibility. In fact, if he were to run as the Republican candidate, the massacre might have just handed Donald Trump the Californian vote, which is huge.

Let me tell why....

People who ridiculed him up to then are looking at the situation differently. You have Obama who says "ISIS is Contained" on the morning of the Paris massacre, and then he did it again. On the morning of the San Bernardino massacre, he says "ISIS cannot harm us". That is a huge gap in credibility he created for himself, and demonstrates how far removed the leftist sentiments are from reality.

And there is that huge gap between credibility and reallity, between those opinions and how voters actually see their reality. And clearly, you folks have no idea how voters in the US see their realities.

Unfortunately, Donald Trump is making more sense to them than you lot. But I wouldn't expect you to be able to fathom that

No. You are absolutely right.

But we're managing to keep those sordid U.S. views out of Europe and we have been managing for many, many years.

I remember a quote from a U.K. politician that I heard twenty years ago as a response to one of your many, many mass shootings:

We don't want the American way of death so let's not have the American way of life.

So as long as my vote counts in at least part of Europe, I think we're doing something right.

And this thread, and other media forms remind me, evereyday, of how much my opinion does matter.

And here you are talking about a topic in America which shows you clearly do not even understand it. Your sentiments are like hot air coming from your behind in comparison.

I haven't actually offered my personal opinion as much as telling you factually what is taking place in America.

So I have a close friend in San Bernardino who has an autistic child. He takes his child once a month to that same location the massacre took place. My friend is socially liberal, fiscally conservative, and he's black. He has always been vocal against gun violence, as he's seen what it has done to the black community in the US.

But in a conversation yesterday, he said he is now considering getting firearms. Not for himself, nor for the love of it, nor for some ego trip, which is probably the extent of reason you folks can imagine. He said he is seriously considering it for the protection of his family. But you folks have no such sense to respect such sentiment. Between him and you folks, I don't see him as the asshole in the comparison. I respect his sentiment to protect his own family over your hot air.
