Because the locals admit they aren't safe places so there's nothing to disprove?
While some may not consider me "local" anymore, I've tried many times to tell folks there are race issues in the US, and depending on your race, there are areas that may not be safe.

So far as US vs UK thing that people have brought up, while I think it is pretty obvious that gun crime in UK is not as bad as US, I think knifing incidents (random?) are very much a problem in UK. I remember being shocked when I got here and started watching UK channels, hearing something about "hoodies" being banned in some areas due to the link to knife crimes - as if people wearing hoodies must have knives, and people without cannot?

Re: A shooting just happened in ( *fill in the blank * )

I'm sure one of the arguments 'for' guns in the US is the right to protect.
I wonder how that argument will hold up in this case.

Re: A shooting just happened in ( *fill in the blank * )

13 people reported killed at Washington Navy Yard,

Alexis, from Forth Worth, Texas, was arrested over gun-related incidents in 2004 and 2010 in Fort Worth and Seattle
and was described in police reports as "seething with anger".

How is it that news people can produce reports about people within hours, yet HP employs him with a police record?

http://uk.news.yahoo.com/gunman-aaro...3.html#XSDuFc4

The Washington Navy Yard is a sprawling labyrinth of buildings and streets protected by armed guards and metal detectors, and employees have to show their IDs at doors and gates. But Alexis was carrying three weapons - an AR-15 assault rifle, a shotgun and a handgun that he took from a police officer at the scene, officials said. David Stevens, a Navy contractor who was on the third floor of Building 197 when the shooting began, told The Washington Post: "It's unbelievable that someone could get a rifle in there."

-
so the security level there was about zero. Sadly the US can only blame these killings on its own incompetance.

Again, I would like to stress the fact, that there were several shootings which took place in Switzerland but nobody bothered to "report" these in this thread. It is interesting how some of you stick up the a** expats adopt the same "hush-hush-nothing-happened-here-look-the-other-way-attitude" the domestic media is practicing.

If some of you would bother to read the press, then you would certainly know about them. Interstingly enough, there are usually reported in a small paragraph somewhere after Justin Bieber's hickups, the calendar girl of the month and the featured travel destination...but god forbid violence should happen in the US, a country of 305+ million people. It's unheard of.

Because preachy liberals in the US tell companies like HP that they're being too strongly judgemental and not giving the poor criminal (because, of course, criminals are just misunderstood, or victims...) a second chance. You can't win in a society that will hang you for not being compassionate, and hang you if your compassion turns out to be misplaced.

Because the articles are all in etiher German, French or Italian and most of you already struggle with English...hence, I'm not sure if it had the same pull.

Because some of us aren't here to portray other countries in a negative light, but get frustrated by the repeated efforts of others to do so towards our own country... Maybe?
