No, more along the lines of words like "racist" or "ignorant". A statistician would tell you the number of gun owners compared to the number of gun accidents are very small.
Like "racist" or "ignorant"?

So someone who says there are a lot of gun deaths in the U.S. is like a racist?

Or, someone who says there are a lot of gun deaths in the U.S. is ignorant?

Nice one, Esto!

I suppose all those deaths are just "collateral damage"? Eh?

Apart from being tiring, it is flat out ignorant. Its a cliche and caricature from the 1800s that sound really stupid to repeat over and over again. But yeah, knock yourself out.
I think you forgot to add the "God-fearing" bit.

I don't get the trigger happy redneck yank gun owners comments, either. There are so many places aside of the US where guns are frequent, maybe even more. And people actually get trained at shooting (I did, and I know bunch of kids who target shoot here, too, and taking trains filled with armed soldiers here doesn't bother me, either). Most people who grow up with guns back where I was born actually turn into biathlonists or competition target shooters. It's a skill like any other, and considering the risk involved, it turns people into careful beings. Not mass murderers, statistically speaking. And the fact media feed on portraying yanks certain way...how credible is it really. US is a huge area, any other large area will have certain density of crazy stories. I believe violence is a sociological phenomenon. What people use for violent acts doesn't have to enable. They would use whatever.
Yes, I can see the headlines now, "Twenty eight people were brutally murdered by an assailant armed with a pair of scissors and a wooden spoon"

In Austin, Texas over the weekend - a pro-gun mass shooting simulation. Followed by anti-gun rally complete with dildos and fart machines. "I fart in your general direction"

Well obviously you are wrong there otherwise there wouldn't be so many people getting shot.
Bullshit.

Very few people are getting shot, and by very few people.

Most gun owners do not shoot other people, otherwise there would be several hundred million shot to death every year in the US.

Guess it depends on your perspective. In 2013, about 33,000 deaths from firearms in the US. That's 1.3% of all deaths. About 2/3 of those were from suicide.

Your general attitude towards gun owners seems to be prejudiced and based on negative stereotypes. You know nothing about me, but yet insinuate I would shoot random people walking in my yard and believe I got my gun training by watching "Die Hard". I'm sorry you don't realize it, but it's very much along the same lines as ignorant and racist people think. You might want to think on that a bit.

No, it's because you write one thing, and then in the next post you say something completely different.

You don't know anything about me too. You don't know how much I know about guns, how good a shot I am, whether I have belonged to a gun club and so on.

Just because I don't respect U.S. gun culture doesn't mean I know nothing about guns.

You might want to think on this a bit:

So far in the U.S. in 2015:
  • 13 toddlers have killed themselves with guns
  • 18 other small children injured themselves
  • 10 injured other people
  • Two killed other people

Quote:
Missouri had the highest rate with five toddler shootings yet it has relatively lax gun laws - there is no need to have a permit to buy a gun, or to have a license to own one.
From here.

Now if you think you're Chuck Norris and that there shouldn't be stricter gun laws because you know how to handle one, perhaps try and be less selfish and think of other people less able than yourself - like kids.

But then the pro-gun U.S people on here have the same attitude to welfare so your views don't really surprise me.

For example;
Rwandan Genocide; The militias typically murdered victims with machetes.
Nobody knows how many were murdered but it was certainly in 6 figures.
Machetes are not firearms

As Music Chick stated "They use whatever...."

Phos routinely suggests we shut up because we can not possibly understand U.S. gun culture and its history.

It's not too difficult to understand but I think they're outdated and gun laws should be a lot more strict.

Yes, let's compare the U.S. with Rwanda. Similar - in so many ways.

Nice argument. Got any more?

LOL, how are my views on guns tied to views on welfare? You lump groups of people together, and really don't see how prejudiced and bigoted your thoughts and comments to other people really are. Ok I think our conversation here is done.

I quoted an example of a country where most people do not have guns so they use something else.
If the US did not have guns then they would also use something else.

Suicides are self-inflicted and can be accomplished in other ways without guns. I don't see how that relates to gun laws.

The same goes for accidental deaths. Accidents can happen with anything. I think some proper training would help with these kinds of incidents.

Not so much to shut up, but maybe come up with something new and original from time to time, as it seems like the same posts over, and over, and over again. It's like groundhog day.

Some time ago I was staying with someone when there was a knock on the door in the middle of the night. There was no reason at all why anybody should be at the door, given that the house was quite a long way away from either civilisation or hiking trails.

I alerted the householder who went to the door and had a brief conversation with the visitor, who turned out to have no good reason to be there and who, therefore, was dismissed.

It was only later that I found out that the householder had been armed during the whole incident. No shots were fired. No weapons were brandished. No threats were made. The whole incident passed calmly and nobody got hurt. Nevertheless, I found it quite comforting to know that the householder had the means to defend us had the incident turned nasty.

The stereotyping about "gun-happy" yanks in this thread is really quite tiresome. Sure, there are some unpleasant people who think it's fine to go around shooting at people. But there are also hundreds of thousands, perhaps millions, of quiet, sensible, sober gun owners, many of whom live a long way away from the nearest police station, who are grateful to be allowed the means to defend themselves and their families in the very unlikely (but not impossible) event that someone might wish to cause them harm.

Most American city dwellers don't get it, let alone Brits and Europeans.

Maybe there should be different constitutions for city people and country people? I doubt they'll ever see eye to eye on this subject.
Yours hosts weapon was concealed, presumably with safety latch in place, certainly full magazine inserted but not loaded (no responsible gun owner stores his weapon loaded and you didn't know he had one so he didn't load it or you'd have heard it). How long would it have taken him to fire the first shot (just the general direction would do for the first round)?

A hostile intruder will load the weapon before he knocks if he does, probably safety latch off, gun easily accessible if not already in the concealed hand. He'd have fired his first shot before your host would even be past the "Schrecksekunde" (the one second we all need to start reacting).

According to gunviolencearchive.org your gun is almost twice as likely to be fired accidentally than in self defense - and that probably includes the 20% (wiki) they're used by police on active duty.
