This is my hometown

I've been following for 2 hours now. I'm not going to get any sleep tonight. My mother is safe but he is approaching the area where my dad lives.

Several shots have been fired, nobody hurt or killed. Must be foreigners then as every Swiss knows how to handle a gun...

Indeed.

I am truly shocked of what happens twice this week. I have been connected to the news most of the day to follow what's going on. Ottawa is a small lovely town same as Saint Jean sur Richelieu.

Disgusting

I saw the spread in Blick am Abend last night, was disapointed and a bit disgusted of the picture they posted of Cpl. Cirillo. No shame at all.

and just a personal thing, they should have posted the picture of Sergeant-at-Arm Vickers as most people know him:

2-year-old accidentally kills his mom in Wal-Mart

Yet another tragic example of why the USA's gun laws are so messed up... http://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2...mother-walmart

Quote:
Police in Idaho say a two-year-old boy shot and killed his 29-year-old mother in a Walmart store after finding the weapon in her purse.

The Kootenai county sheriff’s office said Veronica Rutledge was shopping with her son and three other children in the small town of Hayden when the boy, sitting in the front of the shopping cart, found the gun and shot her at about 10.20am local time.

The sheriff’s spokesman Stu Miller said Rutledge, who was from Blackfoot in southeastern Idaho, had a concealed weapons permit. She was visiting relatives in the area, he added.

Miller said the young boy had reached into his mother’s purse and grabbed a small caliber handgun, which discharged once. “It appears to be a pretty tragic accident,” he added.

Rutledge’s husband was not in the store when the shooting happened but arrived shortly after the shooting. All the children were taken to a relative’s house.

The victim’s father-in-law, Terry Rutledge, told Associated Press that she “was a beautiful, young, loving mother.”

“She was not the least bit irresponsible,” he said. “She was taken much too soon.”

The shooting happened near the store’s electronics section. Police reviewed store video to determine the shooting was accidental, the Associated Press and local media reported.

A Walmart spokesperson called the incident “very sad,” and said the store was “fully cooperating with the sheriffs deputies as they investigate this matter”.

The store was closed for the evening but will reopen at 6am Wednesday, according to information provided to the sheriff’s office by store managers.

Hayden is a northern Idaho town of 13,000 people, about 35 miles east of Spokane, Washington.

In November, a woman in Oklahoma was fatally shot by her three-year-old with a semi-automatic handgun. Police said it appeared the child picked up the gun while his mother was changing a one-year-old’s diaper.
Of course, it's not even slightly irresponsible to carry a loaded weapon in your handbag, apparently with the safety off, and within easy reach of your baby children in a supermarket? The one saving grace is that the unwitting toddler didn't shoot himself or any other random passer-by in the process.

End result: three kids now grow up without a mother, and that child has to live with the knowledge in later life that, even if by accident, he killed his own mother.

I have no idea how people can still stand behind America's liberal gun laws when things like this continue to happen.

And this is the country that bans Kinder Eggs for being too dangerous.

Anyway, this story won't change anything.

The sort of people who feel it necessary to carry a gun when they go shopping have their brains wired in such a way that they're not going to change their ways with news like this.

That's because far more kids would have access to Kinder Eggs than to guns and according to US laws, they represent a choking hazard and hence it would be a liability issue. On the other hand, Switzerland for instance has extremely lax rules where it comes to children's toys as they don't even adhere to EU norms; that is why, you will find toys in Switzerland, which are deemed unsafe by EU standards because they pose a choking hazard.
On the other side of the spectrum, thanks to the 2nd amendment, you are entitled to protect your life and property in the US. In Switzerland however, if you would shoot a perpetrator in your own home, despite being under immediate threat to your life, you will most likely end up in jail. What system is right/wrong is very hard to determine....the incident at Walmart, as tragic as it is, has to do with responsibility and clearly, the young person who lost her life wasn't thinking about that gun in her purse during her visit to the store.

Just out of genuine interest, any examples of where this has been the case? Or where the law states anything relevant to these situations?

And you find toys in the EU which are banned in the U.S.

Your point was what, exactly?

And if liability is such an issue, why dos it not apply to hand guns in the same way as Kinder Eggs?
Are U.S. lawyers so bloody useless or is more that the gun lobby is so powerful?

The point is, that you cannot blame the manufacturer for something the product is intended to do. A gun is supposed to shoot. A children's toy has to be designed so that it cannot pose a choking hazard...as otherwise it will and should be banned.
