Without wishing to be flippant, I wonder whether he was in the closet himself. His father appears to be a big cheese in the expat Afghani community with his own Youtube channel, so not exactly someone who would embrace a gay son.

Its hack EF psychology at its best, but an internet bride, subsequent violence towards his ex wife, choice of target etc.. it does seem to fit a pattern of someone who was at war with himself.
Thought so.

Yeah, it's a tempting shortcut. But I think the guy was really sick and unstable. According to his current wife (widow), he was lurking in two different places

That's a very odd link you just provided, in support of your pro- (or is it anti-anti-)gun stance.

From that report:

"The man stabbed the officer to death": this is your clue that NO GUNS were involved. Nobody shot anyone to death (except the police, when they killed the assailant, I assume). And there was NO MASS SHOOTING.

So in conclusion: yes, strict gun laws prevented a mass shooting in Paris.
yes only 2 people stabbed this time (leaving one orphan)! obviously gun laws are working!

again islam inspired, but thats just a strange coincidence

Re: A shooting just happened in ( *fill in the blank * )

If this is an act of terrorism will guns be banned?

I think it is safe to say Americans aren't going to ban guns after a mass shooting - but after the last major act of terrorism the US banned a whole litany of items on planes, belts and shoes have to be removed (and scanned) security was ramped up to 11!!

Or will the US decide that terrorism committed with a gun neither counts as "proper" terrorism OR as a gun massacre?

No, only items which can be used with deadly force such as Kinder Eggs are banned in the U.S. Oh, and nipples too.

That's because liquid containers, belts and shoes aren't covered by the 2nd Amendment .

I might have made this point before (probably in this very thread), but are US gun advocates using the 2nd Amendment as an excuse or a reason to own firearms?

Well, duh!!! Obviously.

Presumably you'd have preferred the assailant to go at his victims with 1,000 rounds spewed out of an AR-15 over the course of half an hour. Clearly a much better likely outcome for all concerned. Oh, and the added benefit of no orphans left alive.

What in f's name!

OK that kind of forms a pretty clear picture. Homophobe father, likely closeted gay guy, probably somewhat influenced by radical/fundamentalist thinking, goes on to shoot others due to some form of self-hatred. Lovely.

As said, no terrorism, simply a sick mind.

Exactly.

I would guess that his "pledge of allegiance to IS" during his 911 call was a last-ditch attempt to gain his father's approbation.

Sadistic humor at its best but it does bring to light certain aspects of relevancy and feel its worth seeing. Assume a sequel will be unlikely.

So we've got a self-hating homophobe Muslim who had confused sympathies for various extremist groups, a history of being a dick, and some legally purchased guns which probably should have been inaccessible to him if only the relevant authorities had done their jobs properly.

What are we discussing, exactly?
