Oh, I missed this gem before

On news reports:

Because I do not find them very convincing; most of them look like they were invented by the reporter who wrote them based on a few scraps of real information.
So instead, you rely on personal conjecture based on your first hand experience of a few episodes of Prime Suspect & questions asked to random strangers on an internet bulletin board in Switzerland?

Brilliant.

Reassuring to know professional hit squads operate in the area.

For the hard of reading, the police stated that they didn't want to disturb a crime scene and perhaps lose vital forensic evidence. Not only was there a visual check of the occupants, they used a thermal imaging camera. She was hidden, so she didn't "look dead" - she wasn't visible. It's understandable that they didn't think there was the possiblity of someone being alive in there. As soon as they found out about the second daughter, the priorities changed and they got her out.
I agree with Marton - the Police were bloody amateurs - or French Police procedure is rubbish.

What they would do in the U.K. is wade in first and check all bodies for signs of life and confirm that no one was hidden under another body.
(Gunshot victim can remain alive for hours).
Then, when that is done, the scene can be locked down for forensics.

Do doctors in hospitals use thermal cameras to see if people are alive?

You really do not believe that trained professional police officers should actually physically check if victims are really dead?
Given the guile and cunning of some of these nut-cases I think most police forces have been trained to exercise utmost caution in the event there might have been booby-traps.

I'm not sure that professionals do "wade in" on any crime scene (unless maybe if there are obvious signs of life flapping around). I think that's usually the downfall of the well-meaning public, sadly.

It's easy to criticise the entire French police force from the comfort of our own personal command centre fitted with a fancy "hindsight" function but it must be absolutely traumatic for any human being (trained police officer or otherwise) to attend such an horrific scene of carnage. I'm sure they acted in the best way possible at the time.

In the U.K., at a crime scene, a doctor decides whether people are dead and not a Policeman. And they don't normally wait eight hours.

Seems as if the police might be looking into a familial grudge motive, the murders had a somewhat professional signature.

Re: French shooting killing 4 British

From what I've read this was a last minute family holiday, where the family quite literally jumped in their car and drove off to France. Therefore if it was a professional hit, the planner would have had to have had advanced knowledge and the ability to supply weapons, untraceable cars, hitmen etc.. to France. It would have been far simpler to do the job in the UK if that is where he made the most enemies.

Therefore part of me thinks it was either a bungled robbery, or a racial/xenophoic hate crime.

With the exception of the 8 hours thing, the police will stop any further danger to life and I would imagine that would include preventing a doctor from putting himself in the middle of the scene.

I am also unsure what the hold up was and only the a full investigation will uncover the truth.

This in itself seems a bit suspicious to me; to go on a last minute holiday just when schools are starting?
Or were they running from something?

From what I read, the local Gendarmerie contacted the Police at the National level who then flew in forensic experts from Paris. It was this delay in waiting for them to arrive that cause the eight hour wait.

I'm sure I read that they did have a doctor confirm they were dead. What they didn't have was a forensic team that had to come down from Paris.

I was really skeptical of the "hit" theory. But reading more today, I think it's possible. As was said above, it was a last minute trip. The father was very preoccupied about something and it seems they were shot quite "professionally." Although all the scattered gun shots have me confused.

Terrible story though! Quite sad for those little girls.

Re: French shooting killing 4 British

Did the British RAF guy do it, he was the one out on his bike and who called the police. Did the family stumble across another activity, may be there was a gang killing and just happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time. A getaway car was seen with two people in. Why aren't the French police combing the local area, stopping all cars, doing a detailed door to door search, are there more bodies? The French Police know more than they are telling us. Did the killers flee out of Geneva airport? Why were there large bags still left in the car, surely they had enough time to unpack the car?

About "What does however strongly suggest a "hit" are the large number of shell cases found at the scene"

Really? I would have thought professionals would get up close & use a minimum of bullets
I mean so far as we know the victims were not carrying weapons so getting close would not be risky??
Not true actually. The kind of hit-man who coldly calculates and uses as little munition as possible is more something which comes out of Hollywood. The person responsible here however wanted to make sure that they met their targets, therefore producing a lot of empty cases. This kind of thing is quite common in other parts of the world in the drug scene.
