World's first GM babies born

"In case you missed the headlines the first time around. Yes, people, we are there. This is actually happening.

NOTE: In all likelihood, the first GM babies were born many years ago, & these are simply the first ADMITTED GM babies."

Re: World's first GM babies born

I don't know why anybody should be surprised by this, it was only a matter of not if but when.
On one hand we (Homo-spellchecker) have been around now for around 2 million years, we have been anatomically modern for about 200,000 years and in the last 50.000 years are we were all kitted out with the same potential for intelligence. However Homo sapiens sapiens sapiens will one day in the near future become as extinct as Cro-magnon or uncle Neanderthal. So why not tweak the gene pool to get homo sapiens sapiens superior?
On the other hand, the theory of eugenics has been around for a very long time, it just got bad press in the going out of business sale of Germany in the forties, and who would have guessed that the Trekkiverse would have been more or less correct with the Eugenic war set at the end of the millennium.

This will end badly. If I've learned anything from Movies and TV, it's that Genetic manipulation will always lead to super villains, and that all clones will eventually turn evil!

What will happen at sporting events in the future? Testing for genetic modifications, will that ban them from participating? (Like drug tests?)

Why? Simply look at our track record! So far were we only able to do this sort of stuff through selective breeding of domestic animals.

We managed to turn this:

into this:

From all humans is it on average the lower educated part of society that has more kids. Fortunately for us has nature managed to make the IQ of kids independant from their direct parents but connect attributes of the kids to other relatives.

Now imagine what those parents will make for choices if they can! We will not create something more superior but probably something hideously... you know

On the upside: Blondes are not going to die out anymore.

I don't know why anyone's surprised by this, surely anyone who's seen the film Twins will know this has been possible since at least the mid eighties.

Re: World's first GM babies born

Sure, the babies are healthy now. What about down the road when they grow up? Will the different mitochondiral sequences cause some sort of unexpected genetic problem in the future?

Now suppose two of these babies grow up to be adults and get married and reproduce. You then have a new human with DNA from six grandparents instead of four. Multiply down the generations. Surely this is not a great idea.

Are you worried that GM babies will put boob surgeons out of buisness?

Nothing motivates me and gives my life more meaning than watching Jersey Shore.

But can we selectively produce GM Guidos?

Yein. I'm a believer of the fact that as a race we are weakening our stock. Through medical advances people are alive and able to reproduce who maybe should not be, thereby increasing the weakness of our genetic stock, if you will.

While I would never deny anyone treatment (not that I have the power to of course), I believe that the future is not that healthy for the human race.

Good for the pharma business though...

I can imagine that if GM for humans advances, we may all be able to have babies who are a cross between Einstein and the latest super model. What it would be like living in a world inhabited by such people is a different question though.

I think it was Shaw, who, when propositioned by a beautiful lady suggesting that if they had children, then might have her looks and his brains, replied "Yes. But they might equally have your brains and my looks...".

Re: World's first GM babies born

Daring experiment, the parents must have been desperate for a child.

Haven't read about this but I'd guess they have tested the transfer of mitochondrial DNA using a mouse model and (hopefully) wouldn't have tried it on people if the outcome would have been worrying. But mice are short-live mammals and the results are not always directly transferable to humans.
