Nope, because it's still whining on a very high level. As long as even the poor in the US are richer than most middle-class people elsewhere, as long as courts function and you can complain about things on the internet you're still doing just fine. This whole economic crisis is a bloody joke, the only ones suffering are young people who can't get a job, that's not nice, I admit. All the rest should get on with their lifes and stop protesting about being a little bit less ridiculously rich and spoilt.
I think that, if you actually were American -- and experienced your family members losing their jobs and an increase in poverty all around you -- your views might be a bit less narrow. Besides, one's socioeconomic status shouldn't determine their right to desire change in the system. In fact, if more upper-class Americans cared about the middle-class and lower-class, I think American would be in a much better state than it is now.

But we are not talking about changing the system, thats a different topic. The topic is can you see people seeking asylum from the US in Switzerland (or anywhere else really). The poor aren't going to be able to even afford a ticket to get to the border to claim asylum and even then on what grounds?

The US had poverty in good times and maybe has more now in bad times. Thats not a function of the country not having enough resources available, and thats why Simon is saying there will not be much sympathy (for the country as a whole).

I think the point the OP is trying to make is are people going to be looking to escape an overbearing, overreaching government and I don`t think its necessarily the poor looking to bail.

True. If being poor were a valid reason for asylum, then world wide hundreds of thousands would be applying daily.

You're right, my post wasn't directly on-topic. I was simply responding to a post that I disagreed with.

Ah, now I remember. You've got the friend who had 17,000usd confiscated when he opened his wallet to show his license to the cops.

Must have been one really really big wallet.
