Poor Anders - life is so unkind

Gee, I feel really sorry for the guy. I mean, is this any way to treat a mass murderer?

BBC report:
"The Norwegian convicted of the massacre of 77 people last year has said he is being held in "inhumane" conditions.

Anders Behring Breivik complained in a letter to the prison service that his coffee is served cold, he does not have enough butter for his bread, and he is not allowed moisturiser.

Breivik is serving a minimum 21-year sentence for the bombings and shootings in Oslo and Utoeya island last July.

The Norwegian authorities have not commented on the letter.

However his lawyer has confirmed that the details of the 27-page document leaked to Norway's VG newspaper are authentic.

Breivik is being held in almost complete isolation - 23 hours a day, he says - at Ila prison outside Oslo.

His cell includes three sections, one to sleep, one for study and a third for exercise - each measuring 8 sq m (86 sq ft).

In the letter, he complains that the cell is poorly decorated and has no view.

"I highly doubt that there are worse detention facilities in Norway," he writes.

Among his other complaints are:

the handcuffs he wears when being moved around the prison "are too sharp and "cut in his wrist"the cell is too cold, forcing him to wear three layers of clothes
he has to rush his morning shave and brushing of teeth
light and television switches are outside the cell, so he has to ask for help to change channel or sleep.

Ila is an all-male institution which "houses some of the country's most dangerous men", its website says. However it differs markedly from other maximum security jails in western Europe. The staff is a half-and-half mix of men and women and none are armed.

Breivik massacred 77 people, most of them teenagers at a youth camp run by Norway's governing Labour Party.

His 21-year sentence can be indefinitely extended for as long as he is considered a danger to society."

Please give us a break, Anders. You have more than your victims so you have absolutely nothing to complain about.

And yet you don't want the poor little fishes to be hurt.

He's looking for more attention, and a prisoner complaining is hardly new or news. Move along, people, nothing to see here....

I'm with you. Certainly shouldn't be living in 3-rooms prison luxury, even if he doesn't have a view. You don't keep rabid dogs alive, you put them down. He's rabid, he shouldn't be allowed to live.

I disagree, the guy doesn't deserve to die. Dead, he wouldn't be stuck in prison and wouldn't pay for his actions. But he definitely doesn't suffer enough. He should have access to nothing except bread and water and a hole as a toilet.

Do you really think he's paying for his actions? Why should the general public be expected to pay thousands and thousands every year to keep such people alive, but detained for probably the rest of their lives? Sorry, although I'm not religious I'm with the Bible on this one. An eye for an eye and a death for so many dead by his hand.

I do NOT feel sorry about him in any way, and personally would have tortured him to death over a year's time. But we cannot have a law-state on Monday, Wednesday and Friday and a revenge-justice-state on Tuesday and Thursday. Therefore some considerations to follow below ---

Anders Behring Breivik complained in a letter to the prison service that his coffee is served cold, he does not have enough butter for his bread, and he is not allowed moisturiser.
-
While I can understand that the prisoners are not allowed moisturisers and other articles of comfort, there is absolutely no reason why the coffee has to be cold when coming them or why the butter is to be rationed. Sure, in old times, prisoners only got bread and water, the bread stale and the water out of the river. But those times are past times

The isolation is highly justified, not least for his own safety. And his "cell" apparently is almost an apartment. They however might check what "decoration" might be alright from both a security perspective and a psychiatrist perspective. 2 decades leaves enough time for such things

light and television switches are outside the cell, so he has to ask for help to change channel or sleep.
-
While it is obvious that the switch for the light has to be OUTSIDE the cell, it of course should be possible for him to switch the channel. The reason for the short time he has for shaving and for brushing the teeth quite obviously is the idea that the prisoners all have to do it in the morning. Would the alloted time-slots for this for the prisoners be spread over the day there would be more time and far less stress for the prison personnel.

I believe, correctly or not, that he for the foreseeable future IS a danger to society, but in one or in two decades, things may be different.

He IS a devil and a maniac. But there is no reason not to check his "recommendations" as outlined above

Absolutely my personal feelings as well but as I am strictly in favour of a law-state, I have to accept different considerations

Sure, he profits from the law-state. BUT the point about this is that the general public HAS a law-state. And that is worth a lot. And let's not forget that executions are NOT free of charge at all.

You mention the Bible, but the Bible says

"Vengeance is mine saith the Lord!"
"for it is written, Vengeance is mine; I will repay, saith the Lord." (Romans 12:19)
God did not say vengeance is ours. He said vengeance is His. If we want to be on the receiving end of God's blessings and favours, we have to truly understand what it means to give it completely over to the Lord.
"Do not say I'll pay you back for this wrong! Wait for the Lord, and He will deliver you." Proverbs 20:22
