BUT should religion come into it?? Should medicine and religion not be seperate. Is it not reasonable to expect the very best hospital care for you... life saving care... regardless of someones faith.
Nice idea in practice, but reality is not so black-and-white. Each person's faith (or lack of faith) influences how he or she sees the world. We don't know if these doctors were conflicted or not. It's possible they acted in what they genuinely thought was the best interest of baby and mother.

I think the laws need to be clearer, and maybe also the medical definitions. Just because a fetus has a heartbeat that does not mean it would survive outside the womb. In this case, it seems pretty clear the fetus would not have survived either way, so then the focus should have turned to saving the mother. I cannot imagine that letting both die for the sake of the fetus is what God really intended.

Maternal mortality ratio (modeled estimate, per 100,000 live births)(1990-2010)

Ireland: 6
Australia: 7
Switzerland: 8
UK: 12
Canada: 12
New Zealand: 15
US: 21

"Maternal mortality ratio is the number of women who die during pregnancy and childbirth, per 100,000 live births. The data are estimated with a regression model using information on fertility, birth attendants, and HIV prevalence."
