I agree not all jokes are funny but I'm putting it in perspective. She was not responsible for a security breach, she put a telephone call through to her colleague. The hospital say there was no problem, no disciplinary worries etc over this. I'm sure she felt bad about it, but I think there must be another reason for her suicide. You and me arguing over a joke doesn't help her kids.
It doesn't help her kids but it does help highlight the severity of what has occurred so it can't be dismissed as just one of those unfortunate incidents. We will see if there were other matters in her life in due course I am sure, but she was described as feeling 'very confused and lonely' in the aftermath of the event. If you remember that British weapons inspector also killed himself simply because of pressure applied to him by a few mp's. personally I think she was a normal lady put under unbearable strain.

It seems she had some personal unresolved issues---as is commonly the case with suicide victims.

I see 2 personal situations: 1. she had suicidal feeling before, and this prank was just the tick before she lost it.
or
2. she was emotionally unable to deal with the issues that the joke produced.

Eitherway in hind sight it would have been ideal that she had gotten help with herself before it got out of hand. If not for herself, at least as a mother for the children she abandoned.
Do you have any details of the previous suicidal tendencies ? A link or report perhaps ?

It was a cruel and stupid hoax that was done without thinking of the possible consequences.

And Aussieswiss wonders why the Swiss don't have microwaves....

None at all, it was speculation. Generally speaking, psychologically healthy people do not give up on life because they were the victim of a joke (whether is was cruel joke in bad taste or not) or made a work-related mistake, abandoning their dependent children.

It would have been even more "ideal" if that Australian airhead had done something more useful with her life -- like becoming a nurse.

Re: nurse pranked by aussie radio over royal sprog has topped herself !!

Public humiliation or perception of public humiliation is a trigger for suicide. I feel for her and her family, and I don't think that it's really excusable behaviour from the radio station (and I'm Australian and quite familiar with their 'brand' of humour)... "oh... sorry, we didn't think we'd be able to trick anyone, so sorry oops"... doesn't wash with me. No one deserves to be publically humiliated, for whatever 'humour' value you get out of it...

That's a good compassionate sentiment to express - thanks. Much more rational than the "she must have had issues to treat her kids so badly" line of thinking. You are absolutely right about the terrible potency of 'public humiliation', and not just public here but global. People who take a professional pride in their work can be destroyed by this sort of thing, as we have seen today.

Nothing more from me on this. I feel strangely upset about it, and I will get angry if I continue to read and reply.

I can understand your point of view, my point of view is just that I would put my personal 'image' to the general public and my professional life and pride second to my children. A far second. There are many people who put their professional pride and image far before their children, but I personally find that to be a psychologically mis-evaluation of values. Agree to disagree.

Yeah, but I don't think depression follows the laws of reason in the first place. If someone is deeply depressed or mentally unbalanced, something even seemingly very trivial could be "the last straw" to set them off.

It's really very sad that a woman -- a mother -- has died because of this. I hope those two DJ's are ashamed of themselves and re-evaluate their modes of humor.

As sad as the situation is for all involved, such triggers can occur at any time and any place. This situation just happened to be a poorly tasted prank which came across an unfortunate and unintended victim.

Re: nurse pranked by aussie radio over royal sprog has topped herself !!

We can speculate but we don't know. I assume there were other factors and that this was the last straw but I don't agree that the DJs are held fully responsible.

My mother and my brother both attempted suicide for complex reasons, but in both cases there was a trivial thing that set off the final action. To blame the person for that final push would have been wrong.

I feel sorry for the kids. I never, ever forgave my mother for trying to kill herself. I hope that these kids are more understanding and forgiving than I was.

Re: nurse pranked by aussie radio over royal sprog has topped herself !!

In Germany, you've got to ask for permission before you can air such a call.
Same with all the candid-camera shows.

I have to admit, though, that the prank was done quite cleverly:
- call someone who doesn't know anything about the actual situation and pretend you are someone else
- have the call forwarded and have the forwarder introduce you as a person with a privilege to know the information.

Kevin Mitnick describes it in "The Art of Deception":
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Art_of_Deception

I do have a problem with pranks like these if the people they humiliate aren't public figures anyway. If your financial well-being depends on your regular presence in the yellow-press (or if you were mentally disordered enough to drag yourself into the limelight via some stupid tv-show), then you damn well have to endure the occasional prank. But if that's not the case, I see little reason for going public with such a stunt.
It's a shame.

Well, I guess some people think that suicide is selfish. And I don't know... maybe it is. But, sadly, I think some of these people who commit suicide do it because they think their children would be better of without them.

I think there are many reasons for suicide but they don't always make sense 'logically' if you know what I mean. I believe that some studies have shown that you almost 'talk yourself into it because it is the right thing to do'.

Suicide is considered selfish only by people who have never been pulled into the deep absess of whispering demons.

I'm not so sure, I think people who have been close to it themselves and come out the other side would also think it selfish. Almost the opposite of what you say BUT everybody is different.

The nurse story is not the best but the DJs calling the hospital on this is hilarous making such of mockery of the prim and proper english security over the royals!
