and one last irony, which is perhaps the cruelest to me - in the US, the strongest advocates for gun rights are almost always the strongest supporters of the US military. considering that they feel it necessary to own firearms in order to protect themselves from their own government, this strikes me as horribly perverted logic.

this

but as is often the case in politics, the fact that the people touting certain arguments often come across as moronic or hypocritical, does not make the arguments themselves invalid.

Yes, it would. Has anyone here made that claim?

Yes, the underlying sentiment of the anti-gun faction is that the police can protect us better than we can protect ourselves, and that we therefore shouldn't have private guns for any purpose.
Eh? The alleged claim I was replying to was
Quote:
... that guns are no longer necessary in the world.
Nothing to do with police there.

I seem to be getting a lot of this today - I write something, then someone replies as if they're reading something entirely different from the words I wrote. Weird

How would you judge that? From the comforts of your home in Switzerland, or from an inner city neighborhood infested by gangs and drugs?
I spent all of my 20s and 30's as a single female living in a very high-crime neighborhood near Detroit. Yes, my car was broken into a few times, but never once did I find myself in a situation where I thought I needed or should own a gun.

Neither have I. There was one occasion of a huge riot in my city when a store belonging to my friend's family was in danger of being ransacked. He asked for help, and I came. They were quite heavily armed. Other stores were burnt and looted. His was not. No shots fired.

No, I think the underlying sentiment of the anti-gun faction is that (in the US, at least), it should not be so easy for people to own or have access to guns, because there is simply no way of ensuring that someone will use their gun wisely (or preferably, not at all) or that the gun will not fall into the hands of someone that it shouldn't.

Do you realize that, in many parts of the US, you can legally own a gun as young as 18???

You can't even legally drink liquor yet, but you can own a gun.

You're not even old enough yet to have established a criminal background, but you can legally own a gun.

It's about more restrictions. And it dumbfounds me that anyone who thinks they have a right to own a gun would not be willing to do a bit more on their part to responsibly maintain that right, if it means helping to ensure that more lives are not needlessly lost.

I think the problem (or one of the problems) is that the pro gun faction don't believe that, but think it is an excuse to introduce the thin edge of a wedge that will over time become increasingly restrictive.

This is not helped of course by some anti-gun folks arguing that guns are bad. Period.

Maybe its another example of a case where the moderates need to address the extremists rather than through inaction creating an impression of approval.

Perfectly reasonable.

Can you imagine how bad it would be if Americans could drink (legally) at 18 as well as owning guns?

For those who fancy a research challenge:
- What % of people killed with a gun are:
1) Suicide?
2) Accidental?
3a) Criminal - either defence or murder - with legal firearm?
3b) Criminal - either defence or murder - with illegal firearm?

NOTE: In the US approximately 1 person dies from a gun for every 10,000 there are believed to exist (outside of the military)

Yeah, it's like a ricochet effect... an infinite game of ping-pong... where everyone construes the other sides' views to support their own, and it just keeps going back and forth.

For me, personally, I just cant fathom that anyone in the US could not recognize that there is a problem with irresponsible gun ownership and that it has become all-too-easy to have access to a gun. I think the recent shooting of a gun instructor by a 9-year old girl is a perfect example. Not even this so-called "proper gun training" can prevent an accident, and there are no laws in place regarding such young kids being exposed to semi-automatics. The name of that damn firing range where it happened -- "Burgers and Bullets" -- just proves how twisted this gun-obsessed mentality has become in the US.

I agree. But I also don't think a drunk 21 year-old with a gun is really that much more responsible than a drunk 18-year old with one.

This is why I think some kind of psychological testing should be required, on top of the background check, in order to legally purchase a gun. Emotional instability runs across all ages, races, and socioeconomic statuses, etc. etc. etc....
