FBI using drones to spy on "homelanders"

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-us-canada-22976598

Senator Rand Paul is at the forefront of the fight to protect privacy for US citizens everywhere. He's also calling for the repeal of FATCA.

Re: FBI using drones to spy on "homelanders"

I don't like the whole concept, and I hate the idea of spying on us for our own good.

Also, as I still fly single engine airplanes from time to time, I'm especially uncomfortable with the idea of sharing the friendly skies with something as big as me, as fast as me, but with no pilot on board who has a vested interest in staying vigilant in order to keep his own skin intact.

Re: FBI using drones to spy on "homelanders"

As with every other technological advance: it can be good or bad depending on the way the tool is used and governed.

Simply put: There are drones with hyperspectral sensors flying over Afghanistan trying to find the IEDs "before the IED finds you". I think that is a good thing.
1. When there are bomb threads do the cops currently remove trash cans or weld close manholes in cities... I think a drone would be less intrusive and less annoying than hundreds of cops searching your bags when you go to some event.
2 The same technology can "look into the earth" - currently do archaeologists start to use it to find hidden cities and temples (I read an article how they found an entire lost city in Cambodia some weeks ago.). I think a drone with a sensor would be less intrusive than a hundred cops digging up your garden if they are suspecting something to be buried there...

If it turns however into standard practice to have some drone with one of those super cameras flying over every city - ideally coupled with systems automatically detecting speeders and recording their number plates... well, then you have a police state.

Bound to happen sooner or later; people want to play with new toys.
These toys seem to offer a lot of benefits to their users so I do not see anybody ever being able to put this cat back in the bag, pity for us.

was looking at the flight radar website and am surprised to see a drone circling over my city for the last hour. A swiss government registered surveillance drone

I would not have expected a surveillance drone circling for 2 hours in Switzerland

They are quickly becoming a fact of live. I see the Irish Navy will begin to use drones in the coming months to patrol large sections of their domain - 1m sq km of sea! I'm half expecting some fisherman to try and have a go at shooting one down with his double barrel shotgun

Re: FBI using drones to spy on "homelanders"

In the USA these tactics have been used by law enforcement for a long time. Airplanes with special sensors will circle over the area where suspects might be hiding and will try to detect them by sorting through cell phone signals and any other signals... Seems to me like the Swiss intelligence drone is learning the same

Re: FBI using drones to spy on "homelanders"

Quote "Earlier this month (Sept. 2014), the Zurich police department began using a drone to take aerial photos of accidents. The drone is most useful for accidents that occur over a large span — such as those involving a crane or train — where in the past it was difficult to photograph an entire accident scene.

The police department bought the drone in partnership with the Zurich department of geomatics and surveying, which wants to update its 3D map of the city. "

Maybe they were just mapping the city?
