There have been many of these type of accidents in the States and I would have thought they'd have learned not to send these explosive products through town centres. Obviously not.

Feel really sorry for the poor folks who got blasted out of their beds. Hope everyone is safe and well.

Awful. I hope there are no casualties.

Many big questions need to be asked around the world, where this is happening?

Not necessarily. The manufacturers of the containers will have to do a safety assessment to modify their designs, for example. There are loads of cogs in the process that aren't constrained geographically to the accident (or potential accident) sites.

Considering the recent arrest of two individuals who had the intention to blow a train from Toronto- New York, there is questions to ask of if this is an accident or...

The fire still on, so we won't get answer before few days certainly. Lovely place though.

Hope those missing were off in vacations...

Re: Quebec Canadian town center 'wiped out' as freight train carrying hundreds of ton

So, what we know so far:

At 11h pm the train was stopped at Nantes (12km from Lac Megantic). The conductor assured he put the breaks on and left the train to go to the hotel waiting for the shift.

The train hit Lac Megantic at 1h am, 2 hours later at 12 km from Nantes at full speed. (????) without a driver and without emergency breaks.

Sounds fishy to me.

Lets assume the driver didn't put the breaks properly, how a train still hit the next city at full speed, 2 hours later with only 12 kilometers distance?

No, it looks like he did, because the engines were still parked up where he left them.

Sounds more to me as if for some strange reason the cars became uncoupled - or someone playing a prank uncoupled them.

Depending on the topography, it wouldn't take long for the cars to pick up enough speed to derail.
