Re: Abuses at UK youth prison reinvestigated

Terrible! I wonder if this happened everywhere in Europe.

Around 1965 we played rugby against the local youth prison, Hollesley Bay, Suffolk. At the evening meal the lads were talking & they obviously really hated the police and their warders. At the time I thought they were losers, and were simply responding to their punishment, now I am not so sure it was that simple.

Re: Abuses at UK youth prison reinvestigated

A victim in the documentary says some of the staff had military backgrounds.

Maybe no direct connection, but perhaps a cultural one:
Judge fears 'Deepcut' culture remains after 'cover up' of army recruit sexual abuse
Frightening cover-up of rape in UK armed forces (cf. US military: survivors say men targeted more often than women)
Military investigations fail rape victims

UK prison service recruitment today:

I'm counting on people being able to open links and see the meaning there, assuming they're up to reading more than one line ...

Re: Abuses at UK youth prison reinvestigated

A lot of media attention about this recently, with hundreds of alleged victims coming forward: Collected media reports

Instead of appearing in a BBC documentary (viewable on above link), alongside victims and a former director general of the prison service, a former governor of the institution issues a statement that doesn't include the word sorry but does point out that he was a churchgoing and community-spirited family man: New police approach to support prison abuse victims

Quote:
"If I had had any suspicions about sexual abuse, or abuse of any kind, I would have...

...was an outstanding catering officer ... we never had complaints about the food ...

I did not have a particularly close relationship with ...

He was an award winning director of amateur dramatics and I took part in three plays ...

The plays took place in the premises of the church that I attended ... Throughout my service I have tried to be involved in community activities with my family.

If staff knew about the abuse taking place in the centre I am very concerned that they let the abuse continue...

I am very sad about the pain brought about by my staff ..."
